need some help my video card took a dump

I have a e-Gforce 8800 gts the sticker on the back says 640MB PCI-E I think its about 5 years old my qustion is what card replaced this card I have a

mother board is a 680i SLI

What's the specs of your power supply (brand, total watt output, 12v rail info)? Have you checked the warranty to see if you can get a replacement? I know thats an old card but you may still be eligible for an RMA.

it doesnt sound like its broken, he just wants an upgrade

yes the video card quit working got green lins all over my monitor I swap the video card out with my sons computer and the lins were gone worked fine
 
It looks like your PSU would meet the requirements for a 465 or any of the cards linkin recommended. Just wanted to double check.
 
maybe double check the warranty at the manufacturer's website. iirc GPUs typically have 3 year warranties (that card is ~4 yrs. old) but it wouldn't hurt to find out for sure.

the 8800gtx came with a a computer I bought used so i did not buy it new I dont know if that matters

typically you need to have some type of proof of purchase and have registered the product with the manufacturer.
 
If you can, I would return it to get a refund, or exchange. Assuming the website prices are right and you payed ~$250 for it, you would be better off trying to get an exchange for:

If you can get a money refund rather than exchange, and are willing to wait for shipping, you can get it cheaper from the egg:

If you can't, it doesn't matter, the 465 is still a decent card. If you are stuck with the 465 and black screen, put your sons video card in again and drop the resolution to 800x600, then try again.

If that fails to work, try each of the DVI headers, I found on my 8600gt and an 8800gt on another system I used that with a single monitor, it would only output on 1 of the ehaders (with dual monitors the other worked). Don't know if that was specific to just the cards and/or systems I used or nVidia cards in general, but you could give it a shot.

If that doesn't work, swap your card into your sons system (you may have to put your PSU in there too if his isn't too great) and see if it has an image on the screen then
