Internet Filtering

I can't understand how anyone can think internet filters are good, let alone useful or effective. They say it's for protecting children which it fails to do completely.

Firstly, i would like to keep this thread as politically free as possible. This is a discussion about Internet Filtering, not politics.

Anyway, if you've been keeping up with the issue, you might find this funny. A satirical website, www.stephenconroy.com.au was taken down because of one reason or another. anyway they changed the URL and it's back up.

There's a video i quite like about the issue, seems they are abusing their power before they even have it:

[YT]6-CvRSIgxU8[/YT]

There are many reason why filtering does not work. I'll keep it short and sweet as most of us know the technical reasons why.

1) Doesn't stop the use of email and P2P to distribute illegal material (their main concern is CP)

2) Slows down speeds up to 87%. Consider that the majority of Australia is on 8 Mbps internet.

3) Blacklists are ineffective, new sites are cropping up all the time.

4) Proxies. We all know how they work or at least what they do.

5) Any 8-year-old child with any technical knowledge knows how to bypass a filter. Ironic, because these kids are exactly who they are trying to "protect"

6) Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. How long before the filter is abused, if it goes ahead, to stop discussions of issues such as Anorexia, Euthenasia (spelling?) and Terrorism, as well as many others.

7) Content that is legal to view, create, own and distribute will be illegal and filtered with the proposed scheme (such as regular pornography)

8) A 17 year old student demonstrated how the filter could be bypassed in a matter of seconds.

9) Even if you have no children, the filter will be mandatory. the government would force all ISP's to use the filter.

10) In many polls, over the internet, phone and newspapers, about 95% of Australian were opposed to the filter entirely.

11) Freedom of speech! The internet is not something you can just deny someone access to. Nor can you censor it!

12) Filtering at the end-user level is much more effective as it allows parents to control access to the internet, and lets anyone without kids access whatever they want.

I'd like to hear everyone's thoughts on internet filtering, and why or why not you support/condemn it.

Personally I condemn it to hell and back. It's flawed, expensive and detrimental to the internet and Australian public in general.

Does that mean Australia is getting a filter on their internet?? Is that what you are saying??
I hate filters :/ like both the one on msn and the one i ahve at school :/
I understand the resoning behind the one at school for websites like facebook, youtube etc. but at my school one of the IT Techs filters the websites i go on (INCUDING THIS ONE) just to annoy me, then unlocks it again for a while so im happy then blocks it again :(
Really stupid websites are blocked - like Yahoo answers... but www.games.co.uk aint blocked... surely that would one of the first ones you would block...

There aint a overall boss of the internet - so why to people try to rule it and block certain pages? excuse me for sounding like a Vulcan... but it dont seem logical :P

And the msn filter thing is a bummer aswell - it means im using eBuddy now to get around it because its so ANNOYING!! .. It wouldnt suprise me if somehow Apple blocks jailbreakme.com

Internet filtering is a waste of time in my opinion, there will always be a way around it.. i know i can find one anyday XD

If it all keeps going on then will the world be kind of like 1984? I hope not :(

^^^ I dunno, the one at our school is quite pathetic to hack, really. I only do it [hack the pathetic school filter] whenever I need to look something up for an important lesson or something; I don't really get time to look at anything else, and I hate being cooped up indoors anyway. Still, at least the filtering in the UK ain't as bad as the government censorship in China

The filter is being shot down now. lots of people don't want it and rightly so. Stephen Conroy is also the reason why Australia doesn't have a R18+ rating for games, where movies and other media do. it makes no sense.

you guys have ESRB in the UK don't you?

Yeah, though it used to be PEGI, they're gradually being phased out.
I think some of the stuff in the media is ridiculous about game age ratings etc.
OK, so killing people isn't nice, but these are games. It's not like everyone who's ever played CoD ( like, 30 million people) will go out and start shooting people and pretending to be terrorists, is it? I love paintball, wasn't there this thing in Australia a few years back where some guy blinded these people with a paintball gun? or was that US? I can't remember. And then there's this whole Politically Correct stuff, which is utter crap if you ask me. People aren't horizontally challenged, they are fat/overweight. And paintball guns are now called "markers", because we wouldn't want to portray Paintball as a mil-sim game. Which it is. Sorry, rant over, that was a bit off-topic :P

Every idiotic thing that has ever happened started because some idiot was "doing it for the children" or spouting "children are our future" if this is what children do I vote we shoot them all or cage them till they are legal :P

Children are our future yes, but older people (especially poeple in government) need to stop forcing their sometimes archaic views down peoples throats!

As it stands now, both parties here agree that Australia needs a filter, but the current plan is impossible to put in. It's gonna cost upwards of $100m AUD, and free software/proxies can disable it in seconds!

I think eventually they are going to lead to home/based filtering. Where parents can control what their kids do, which is fair.

Governments need to stop trying to be parents, and parents need to start taking responsibility for their kids. An Xbox/Ps3/PC isn't a bloody nanny!

ours used to be soooooo easy to get through, just use an https adress to kproxy. new filter is a little tougher, but i found that ultra surf bypassed it, so i uploaded it to the school's public drive and everyone downloaded it XD, it was shortly deleted by the admin, becasue some dumbass uploaded Halo CE and that was using MASSIVE bandwidth with tons of people downloading it to their flash drives and they caught on. also if more than ~ 200 computers try to access blocked websites at once the whole thing crashes and there is no filter, but this has only happened 2 or 3 times

Haha ganzey that sounds like fun. As for filters is school i think they are necesarry as the distraction of games and facebook and all that stuff is not good for schoolwork.

. As for filters is school i think they are necesarry.

..not if the one of the admin blocks computer forum :@

I got my revenge xD - diabled all the shutdown buttons off of the start menus on about 20 computers.. i would have done more bt they discovered it and blocked my internet use for a whole WEEK :/

my schools filter is relatively weak. Cofo and other forums i go to aren't blocked except one because it has news on the mian page :(

I hope that I never become so ignorant and completely hypocritical to force my views upon anyone, no matter how old I get. I think this is right on the dot. When the day comes that even my parent's generation are running shit, I sincerely believe life will be better. Things change for a reason, shit or get off the pot.

yeah our school had ultra surf but john our IT guy can block it completely with his lil policies ;P but i can bypass it :) for games what we did was make a folder on one computer then share it with the network and only allow a few people to access it(like a few friends) we called it the friend file lol
