i need to run pro tools on my HP Pavilion a510n

im planning on changing the processor and adding RAM

which processor can my computer handle? thats a reasonable price. and will allow me to run ProTools (a recording program, for those who dont know) smoothly?

does this mean i can only use AMD athlon?

which is the highest i can get that will fit a "socket A"

i just want to get the best performance out of it. i got this computer for free, and i need it to work for school next month

im already putting in more RAM also

the costs of ram and processor would be more than its worth to upgrade, old parts can be more expensive, id look into buying a cheap motherboard ram and cpu, its more worth your time to do that

It already has a XP Athlon 3000. The highest one was a XP Athlon 3200. Not much of a difference. Waste of money working on it.

okay, but will it be fine running the recording program with just the RAM upgrade? i couldnt install it because it said i needed at least 385mb just for that.

so as long as it runs smooth im okay with it

If its still the stock 512mb. single stick, yeah sure you could get another 512mb. DDR 333 stick. It only has two slots.

your better off selling it and buying a better laptop on ebay .. 2X1GB sodimm will set you back ~ 60 - 80 bucks looking at ebay prices.

it will. your cpu is ok, just add an other 512mb stick and you'll be fine. 2gb would be useless

i already have a laptop. its my main comp. a dell inspiron 1525. its got more ram and stuff. but no firewire. and its vista. i like the simplicity of XP and i need the firewire for protools interfaces.

ill try out adding the 512, thankyou for your help
