USB doesn't recognize

Why would all the sudden my usb ports on my desktop not recognize anything that I plug into them? Tried different cables, printers, stics, and ports.
I am not at home right now so I have no other info.

Try uninstalling the USB controllers in device manager. Reboot and see if they detect your hardware then.

Deleted them and still doesn't make any difference. When I plug anything in it shows up as unknown device in the device manager.

Did you make any recent changes to the computer before the problem with the USB ports started happening?

If you have your motherboard disk, reinstall the USB controllers

What OS are you running. Are you installing the drivers for the devices?

It is the wifes computer, don't know if she added any new programs at the time. Running Windows xp service pack 3. Computer was built from scratch. Looking for mother boards disks now.

Re install the recovery disk the came with it. It happened to my sony vaio after I did an SP3 upgrade.
