No, not 2 single cards in crossfire, 2 5870 chips, on board.

I'm not sure how long it has been out, but when pricing up a cheap system, and getting sidetracked, I found:

http://uk.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=bGf2f0s2zeWhT0w8

The first thing I thought was heat, which the cooler seems pretty able to handle, however the whole heat of 1 chip is staying within the system, which can't be good for internal temps.

Then the thought of when is 4GB video memory actually needed? I understand that they can support 3x 2560x1600 monitors, but does that really need 4GB video memory, and could it even drive that many pixels in the first place? Maybe a few in crossfire :P

I just noticed the power connectors too, 1x6 pin PCIe and 2x8 pin PCIe

The Ares has been known about for some time now.

The power connections aren't surprising either.

Not surprising, no, but insane. I'm sure there will be, or most probably is, a system with more than 1 in, and the power it draws, I dread to think. I wouldn't want it on all the time for the sake of my electricity bill

Indeed:P Yeah, the Ares has been out for a few months, although the sapphire HD5970 Toxic is faster and cheaper -

Isn't a conventional non-OC'ed HD 5970 two 5870's?
I think Asus did one called the "mars" a while back, it put two GTX285's onto one GPU :P

A 5970 is a 5850x2, not 5870. You can overclock each chip to 5870 speeds, but at stock it is 2 5850 chips.

And yea, the mars was 2 285's on 1 board

Oh, right.
Cheers for all the clarification.
Don't see why anyone would spend that kind of money on a GPU that will be superseded within the next 6 months

It won't exactly be lagging behind though, even if it is outperformed. For a good while to come yet it will be maxing out games, it is more for bragging rights than the need for it though, and so companies can say "look at what we can do"

I know I could google it, but I would like to see what sort of ppd they make

Wow thats some card,But at that price i doubt Scan will get many takers :P

1x6 pin PCIe and 2x8 pin PCIe

i don't really see any real advantage here other than cooling. but for the money you save from just getting a 5970 and ocing the crap out of it, you could probably get a decent watercooling system

how long exactly has it been out? i think i first saw it about 3 weeks or maybe a months ago.

Earliest I can find it mentioned is beginning of March, but I think it was released early July

No Aastii, the standard 5970 is two 5870's downclocked to 5850 speeds, they still however have the full 1600 shaders as the 5870 does vs 1440 on the 5850. The ares is pretty much just an overclocked 5970, nothing too special.

Also, those power connectors are there more than likely for when overclocking, not just running the cards at stock(eg- look at the connections the GTX285 classified had).

geez bomber, do you ever go to sleep? :P

These Ares(Well, I suppose the other was a Mars) cards are all so stupid, Asus makes around 1000 of these(or is it not the same here?), sends them out to reviewers and overclockers, the rest go to market. They charge a huge price tag for these, and nobody can get their hands on them even if they want them.
