Which one is the better buy? The OCZ or the XFX.

OCZ GameXStream 850w psu- $75 on-sale at newegg.

XFX Black Edition 80 PLUS SILVER Certified psu- $130-15% on Newegg (aprox. $110)

Assuming I will only need aproximately 660w (but would like some room to expand, 750w being enough in this case), am I better off saving some money with the OCZ or going with the XFX?

I would go with the XFX, simply because it's made by SeaSonic. OCZ doesn't have a good reputation, for poor/very poor support in general. Also, I've heard horror stories about RMA's never getting through:eek:
System specs? Sometimes you need enough rails, and it's not just the wattage of the PSU that counts.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm using:
Intel i7 930 cpu with an EVGA x58 sli le motherboard
EVGA gtx460
6 gb G. Skill ddr3 ram (triple channel)
1 Samsung Spinpoint f3 hdd.
thermaltake Armor a90 case.

If nothing else, the XFX has a 5 year warranty, vs 3 on the OCZ...plus you have to wait on OCZ's rebate. Whatever company they use isn't terribly efficient, so I hear.

This is just me and some people may disagree....If I were to spend money on a new power supply, I would not buy OCZ or XFX.

Corsair has some good prices and are some of the best in the industry.

750w non modular Corsair for $109 ($99 after rebate)

650w modular Corsair for $119 ($99 after rebate)

XFX has by far the best unit on the market for the price(in fact, i prefer it over the seasonic X or AX line from corsair, as even though its ~2% less effecient, its far cheaper, better in transient overshoot tests, and better ripple suppression, and slightly tighter regulation). Its a seasonic M12D platform, and is right now one of the few units that i highly recommend. 5 year warranty, super tight regulation, very effecient, and amazing ripple suppression:

As far as OCZ....i don't suggest ocz.

And as far as corsair's TX line...i can't say i don't suggest them, but its really an aging platform, 100+mv of ripple on the +12v rails is only 20mv within ATX specs.

It is a great model...I read the jonnyguru article...thanks for the link Bomberboy.

The 5 year warranty does no good if the XFX customer support will not support you. It is some of the worst rated in the industry. Just do a couple quick Google searches and you'll see.

Here is a good thread from overclock.net about the customer support with XFX. They actually get in an argument with an XFX rep on the forum...LOL!

I have dealt with XFX support myself, NCSPECV81 is a user who has been banned from these forums here previously. However, i do consider him an acquaintance as i talk to him semi regularly elsewhere, and we were discussing whether or not he should actually take XFX up on their offer to take the trip to cali to see their RMA process. Aside from the fact that XFX may have poor GPU support, their PSU support from the incidences i have ran into have been taken care of quickly and painlessly. There is a reason i suggest against XFX graphics cards(i have had multiple incidences myself), but i will continue to stand behind their power supplies.

Thanks for the advice (once again, in the case of bomberboy). I'm going with the XFX as it seems to be the most reliable for the money.

XFX have been good for me, both product and support wise, Though all the RMA's I've done have been for GPU's.

I'd read some reviews on both of those powersupplies, although I'd be inclined to take the corsair one, because I've never had a corsair one myself (hoping to change that soon.)

Not sure why you would want a corsair over a seasonic built XFX unit....the TX line is quite an aging lineup, never was really a fan of the TX line when the came out to be quite honest(i always preferred the 750W silencer, another seasonic design). The HX line is the only thing i would even consider "comparable" since its modular as well, but its more expensive and still doesnt perform as well.

Well I'm not exactly a guru on powersupplies :o
