Which one is the better buy? The OCZ or the XFX.

OCZ GameXStream 850w psu- $75 on-sale at newegg.

XFX Black Edition 80 PLUS SILVER Certified psu- $130-15% on Newegg (aprox. $110)

Assuming I will only need aproximately 660w (but would like some room to expand, 750w being enough in this case), am I better off saving some money with the OCZ or going with the XFX?

Please post full system specs too.

The XFX is much better quality and I doubt you will ever need the full 62A on the 12V rail let alone 80A on the OCZ.

This Corsair 850W is around $10 cheaper and is better though: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139009 You are getting 8A more on the 12V rail, larger fan (quieter), longer MTFB measured at 50oC.

The XFX is actually cheaper(promo code XFXPOWER knocks $19.50 off of it), and the XFX is a better quality unit than the corsair. The TX850 is higher output, but as far as regulation, ripple suppression, and effeciency, the XFX unit has the corsair beat. Oh yeah, and depending on whether or not you see it as a plus, the XFX is modular. Corsair's AX and HX lines are more comparable to the XFX power supplies, the TX line really needs updating though IMO, really becoming a lineup that is showing the age of the platform its built on.

I agree, the XFX would be the better supply.

There must be some internal differences between the XFX and the old PC Power&Cooling silencer 750W other then it being modular. The XFX is rated as 750W Max with 62 amps Max. The PC P&C was rated as 825W Max with 68 amps Max.

Silencer was built on the old X-900 platform. The M12D based XFX has lower ripple, better regulation, more effecient, etc. The XFX does not display peak ratings, continuous power it is more robust than the old silencer.

Cant remember where I read or heard that the XFX 650 was just a repackaged Silencer 610.

well, the OCZ is 80% efficiency, which means at full/mid load your going to get 680w out of 850w.The XFX is 88% efficiency, which will putout 748w.IMO the XFX is a better buy, you can also consider the 850w Corsair PSU which is a very good one to add.

Wait...I thought that the efficiency was what's lost converting it from AC to DC? That would mean that an 850W at 80% would actually use 1062W of AC power, but the XFX at 88% would only use 965W. Am I wrong?

Correct, the rated output is what it outputs. efficiency is what it will pull from the wall.

Looks like they are using the same PCB's since pcp&c stopped making seasonic units. Some components are different though.
