980x stock cooler + asus rampage 3 OC?

Hey guys/gals,

So i'm extremely new to overclocking basically only watched youtube videos and i know there are a few bad ones out there.... on my MoBo there is an option for easy O.C. to 4.0 ghz... now my question is...
A: is that a good idea? meaning, will the motherboard handle changing the voltage and frequencies... etc?
B: i noticed on some youtube vidz they also changed the RAM mhz when OC.. i use corsair dominator 1600... will i toast my ram if i overclock my cpu?
C: I only have the stock cooler + silver thermal paste (artic cool or something like that) there is a switch for silent/performance... obv i'd put it on performance but will it be good enough?

i'm looking to buy a watercooling kit but again i'm a complete noob on OC/WC stuff so i'm still looking around for options etc.

ok i did the cpu level up "crazy level up to 4ghz"

my temps on idle is about 40 degrees lowest is 36 degrees but one core is at 45 @ idle

when i play Starcraft 2 it is b/w 42-51 degrees

when i do prime 95 its at high 70s / low 80s...

this is all on stock cooler

any thoughts? is it safe to use? or should i put it back down to 3.33ghz?
 
Those temps don't seem too bad on idle and starcraft 2, on prime its getting up there you want to try and keep it lower or between 70-80 look into an aftermarket heatsink and fan.
 
the temps are not going to kill your cpu, but i presume if them temps are like that with stock cooler you might be able to shave off 10-20c with a decent aftermarket cooler

but fi you are wanting to keep pushing your cpu to its limits you would then be thinking about a watercooling loop!

bye the way how long are you running prime95 for? i would advise in running it for no less than 30mins as the temps can creep up over time (30mins is what i used to do to get a better idea of my coolers capabilitys)
 
the stock cooler on the 980x is pretty diesel...but anyways i'm definitely going the Watercooling route... eventually just need to find a good setup and how to do it haha

after using the cpu @ 4.0 ghz i noticed alot of studdering in video/game play... i currently have a hd5970 black edition in there and an 8800gts for physx...but i think they are conflicting some how... i'm gonna pull out the 8800 and test it out... i decided to dial the ghz back down to 3.33 until i get the watercooling setup... anysuggestions ??
 
well there are 2 kinds of water setup.

there is the kind that comes in a kit (most are rubbish) and there is the kind where you choose your own parts (best of everything) but very expensive and can requir some case modifications

you need to decide what you are willing to spend to determin the setup you can get!

make a new thread and list what you want

price - performance - looks - and the case you want to put it all in

Well, in my opinion its more like you have two real options that you stated, as well as a glorified air cooling setup.

1) You can, as funky said, purchase a custom loop, and go with the parts that appeal to you, as well as get the top end components.

2) You can purchase a kit, which as funky said, are generally rubbish. Especially the ones from names such as thermaltake or coolermaster, who generally use aluminum radiators with copper waterblocks, not a good idea(Galvanic Corrosion).

3) You can purchase a self contained watercooling unit, corair H50/H70, Coolit Domino, etc. These are generally similar in performance to higher end air coolers(most are beat by the best air coolers), and to be honest they are really just glorified heatsinks, as you can't really add or change any components in the loop other than the fans.
 
my goals are to reach 4.5ghz while keeping the core @60 degrees on a full load from prime 95... is that goal reasonable with watercooling?
