This question has been on my mind for a long time. Why do people always recommend a mac to art and music students? I read this on websites everywhere and even people around me say things like this:

"I'm an art student, can you reommend a laptop for me?" "If you are an art student, get a mac."

What's so special about a mac's ability to process pictures and edit music that pc doesn't have?

It is because of it's powerful processors like the Macpro with a 12 core processor. Music and Arts software as we know requires speed, a good processor and the likes.

For a student, I would recommend to get the Macbook Pro 15" I7 or I5. You can configure it depending on the need. You may want to check first what kind of software you'll be using and it's system requirements.

come on, you should know that you can build a system with the same power, a 12 core processor or core i processor isn't just for mac's

So far as I can tell, the only reason is for the software that it comes with. You can get software that does the same for a windowqs/linux system, but I suppose it is just for ease, or maybe just because they are students, and a mac isn't the same as a "boring old dell/hp/acer/etc" I think it is the software thing though

I think it's mainly a historical thing now (who didn't like PowerPC :P) but the machines also look like an Art students computer if you know what I mean :P

Not only art/music. Almost everyone at Tufts University uses some sort of Macbook/Pro, even some engineers do (though they have to run windows for many engineering programs. Personally I think the MCP is just better suited for college environments. They are sturdy, sleek and has an insane amount of battery life.

I am fairly certain that half of the reason is the software/operating system that comes standard on mac. Their machines are unbelievably stable and very intuitive.

The other half is hype.
