ive got a amd phenom ii x4 940 quad core 3.00ghz am2+.

In CPU-Z I get This:

Name: AMD Phenom II X4 940
Code Name: Deneb Brand ID: 13
socket AM2+
technology: 45nm core voltage 0.992v
family: F Model: 4 Stepping: 2
Ext. Family: 10 Ext. Model: 4 Revision: RB-C2
Instructions: MMX(+), 3DNow!(+), SSE (1, 2, 3, 4A), x86-64, AMD-V

Is this cpu black ed, and how do you know?

I believe the Phenom II X4 Black Editions were only the 955 and 965 so yours isn't the Black Edition. Another way to verify this is to boot into your BIOS and see if your multiplier goes beyond 14.00.

i went into bios, wne to ai tweaker, set ai overclocking to manual and went onto cpu ratio. the list went from 4.0x to 15.0x.

is this the multiplier?

Yeap, that's the multiplier - so from what it looks like, there was a Black Edition 940 CPU, but the multiplier goes up to 18.00 I believe. If yours doesn't, then it's probably the non-Black Edition.

kk, i seem to remeber buying it from amazon and it saying its the black edition. ill have one more look in the bios.

ive just checked and the cpu ratio goes all the way to 35.00x after i scrolled all the way down. does this mean i have a black edition cpu?

LOL yeah, that's definitely the Black Edition - lucky you! :)

Here, you should read this article at OverclockersClub.com - they do a whole review, overclock, and benchmark on your CPU:

http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/phenomii940/4.htm

From what it looks like, they got a healthy overclock on it at 3.75 GHz (200 FSB frequency with the multiplier at 18.5) with the voltage at 1.55.

But again, if you're going to overclock, use the smallest increments possible and continually check to make sure the system's stable!

Why? You can get an air cooler that will perform as well or better, but cost much less

True story. Get a nice cooler (I'm using the Zalman CNPS9700) with some Arctic Silver 5 and BAM! Like I said, I'm rockin' my 2.8 GHZ 925 at 3.6 GHz right now, fully stable with good temps and voltages.

yea, if you do it right, air can be just as nice, i got the h50 for ~60 bucks so it wasnt bad of a deal, i just wanted something quieter than my damn rosewill that would cool nicely just ramped the fan so aggressively that it was bugging me alot...
