How do you clone a mirrored setup to two bigger drives?

Ok so I haven't tried this ever. I figure it might come in handy to know in the future.

Can you clone a raid 1 on two hard drives onto a bigger hard drive and then hook that bigger one up with an identical drive and run a raid 1 on that? I would not be installing the original drives again in the computer as it's an upgrade of space.

If so what software would I need to do it?

Thanks!

A RAID 1 will operate as a singe drive, as long as you connect the new drive to the same adapter you shouldn't need to do anything else. It should recognize it as a degraded array, and when you connect a second drive, rebuild the array.

Yeah but I already have a raid 1 setup and I want to clone it to a bigger hard drive and then set that one up with an identical drive to it and have it rebuild it on those.

Right but what I'm saying is you only need to treat it like a single drive. So clone 1 drive to a larger 1 drive then put the big drive into your array and have it mirror to the 2nd blank big drive.

Ok I see now! Thanks.

Any good free software that you would recommend for cloning? It's for Windows 7. Windows 7 for me has been pretty picky about cloning.

Do you have to clone the drive on the RAID 1 System manually? don't it the whole idea to have RAID 1 system is the drives are duplicate each other?

The only reason I say to clone it as a single drive is because I dont think the array will partition your empty space. I suppose you could just extend it after the fact.
