Laptop overheating badly. please help.

Hey Guys, my Toshiba Satelite P300 is overheating terribly at least i think i downloaded Speed Fan, Core 0 and Core 1 sit around 95C, im guessing this is way to high? what should it be around?

My computer has been just shutting itself off lately and when i feel the left hand side of the laptop where it blows out hot air and where the ESC/F1 keys are the laptop is boiling hot to touch almost burns your hand if you leave it their for to long. If i dont use the laptop for a day or so and turn it on its cold and usually gets really hot to touch within 45mins or so.

How can i fix this?

How old is this laptop? You may need to open the laptop up and blow compressed air around the cooling fan to blow the dust bunnies out. You may also have a loose heatsink fan. If you aren't comfortable taking it apart, you shoujld take it in and have someone clean it up for you.

Ive had it for close to 2 years (brought new 2008 model) now i use it heavily for web browsng and to play games on, I have never cleaned the inside of it. I have played around with desktops before just never a laptop.

yes, 95 deg Celsius is hot. I wouldn't feel safe anywhere over 75 deg.

Make sure there is no dust blockages in your air duct. Too many times I see laptops with clumps of dust in the air duct/CPU heat sink assembly. I hear Toshiba's are easy to disassemble and will not void your warranty with them.

Since you can feel air pressure, Id assume your fan is working. Double check that it is spinning when the laptop is on.

Lastly, try to use your laptop on hard, level surfaces. It will increase airflow underneath the laptop, allowing more cool air into the case.

Ok thanks guys, i can hear the fan inside going full bolt sometimes especially when im gaming so im assuming its not the fan aswell, would u suggest i open it myself and try to clean it? or take it a computer shop? its not under warranty anymore.
I also only ever use it on a desk, my room does build up a hell of a lot of dust though.
 
Then most likely its got a high buildup of dust inside. I would suggest taking it in to get it worked on, unless you feel comfortable opening it up.

I personally would, but thats because Ive torn apart many laptops in the past. It all depends on how comfortable you are with doing it. Note that there are components that you can break if you are not careful.

alright thanks alot guys, ill google a few tuts on how to open laptops and clean them etc and give it a shot myself, if i open it up and feel totally overwhelmed will make a trip to the computer shop tomorrow.

I hope using Cooling Pads and cooling fans will help you to control overheating laptop, laptop fans are controlled by software which switches a fan on when temperatures measured at critical points on the motherboard get too high, and switches the fan off when temperatures fall into an "acceptable" range.
