a GTX 460 768MB or 1GB

I been looking for upgrading my GPU for a while to a GTX 460.
but the thing is if i get a GTX 460 768MB 192bit will be enough power to run a lot of game like crysis and a lot of the newer games coming out? or should i get the GTX 460 1GB 256bit?

i have to money to buy a 1GB version of the card but i really wouldnt want to spend a lot of money if a 768MB card will do just as much as a 1GB card.

usually i would just take the one lower mem one for the lower price since the performance between it isn't too much... but for the GTX460, the performance diff between the 768mb vs 1gb shocked me.

the 1gb gtx460 is almost and in some cases better than even an hd5850.

so i'd definitely go for the 1gb

well your yet another person said the same thing about the 1gb being better than a 5850.

well what u got my convinced to get a 1GB version. now which card should i get? someone told me to get the MSI HAWK because i can over clock it and comes with some special program or something for OCing it and the card is build with military grade hardware.

or should i go with the EVGA card that is supper clocked? i have a 650w Crossairs PSU btw

it doesn't matter, but i would personally prefer the normal clocked version. if i ever want to over clock it myself, i will. but there are times i would like to have it run on normal clocks for when im not gaming to save a few bucks on the electric bill here and there. but thats just me.

A460 isn't better than a 5850, ever (except for some benchmarks gimped in nVidia's favour). It sometimes comes with in negligable performance difference to it, but won't beat with both at stock clocks

For which to get, all of the cards are the same, the only thing that differs is the cooling, warranty and support and some are factory overclocked.

The MSI HAWK has a pretty damn good cooler on it, but I would say it isn't worth the extra $30-40, you can can a normal card with reference cooler (like the EVGA one that you posted) and it will still overclock very well with good temperatures.

If you do get a 460, the only one you want is the 1GB one. the 768mb ones have a few less cores and other things gimped.

The 460 and 5850 do trade blows in games and benchmarks though.

ok another question right no i have a HD 4850 1GB 256 bit. you think its a wise move to go from a 4850 to a GTX 460?

well, the 4850 is a pretty decent card for it's time. a GTX460 (1GB) sits right between a 5830 and a 5850 which is roughly equivalent to a GTX280 in terms of power. The 5850 is equivalent to the old 4850X2, So you should be expecting about ~70% upgrade from a 4850 to a GTX460.

1 5850 beats crossfired 4870's, as does a single GTX460, so yes, I would say it is a good move from a 4850 to 460

hmm the old 4870x2 still seems to pull a few frames ahead of the 5870. so two 4870 1gb in cf should be better than a 5870

My apologies, typo'd, crossfired 4850's, not 4870's.

As to 4870's crossfired vs 5870, the 5870 takes the lead the majority of the time, with them being near enough equal the rest

thank you so much for the help guys. no other forum on the web (gamespot) ever gave a direct answer to my question with having fanboys saying ATI is better or Nividia is better.

im getting this card in a few weeks. i decided to get the EVGA the lowest end of the 1GB version of the GTX 460 cards

but now im going to have a 4850 laying around what should i do with it? also i do ave a 8600GT too that i havent used for about a year now.

ok someone told me last night that for me because i play on a 1440x900 res the super clocked GTX 460 768MB is right for me. if i was going to play anything high then 1650x1080 then i should get the 1GB version.

is that anyway true what he said?

Yeah, it would cope just fine, but again the 1GB will give you slightly better framerates, no matter what res. you're playing at. Also, I would only recommend buying a pre-OC'd card if you don't feel confident about overclocking, they cost more for a level of performance that can be matched or bettered by a bog-standard cheap card with a reference cooler (pretty decent actually) when you spend 10 minutes with an overclocking application such as MSI afterburner

i have MSI afterburner but the thing is how do i use it. i tryed messing around with it. then when i click on reset. my whole screen went crazy like it was a old TV hooked up on "bunny ears" so i press the reset button on my PC and everything is back to normal.

right now the default setting when i open up after burner is

Core Clock: 625
Memory Clock: 993

Core Voltage and Shader Clock are both locked.

how do i OC my GPU (4850) if i learn how to do it right i can try to buy a normal GTX 460 768MB or 1GB version and OC that.
and fan is set on auto

768mb and 1GB both have the same number of shaders/cores/stream processors/whatever you want to call them(which is why for f@h they have the same ppd). However, the 1GB has 32 ROP's while the 768mb only has 24, this is what mainly causes the difference between the models, although the 1GB also has a 256bit memory bus vs 192bit on the 768mb.
