That basically means the program isn't installed that is associated with that type of file or the installation is corrupt. What happens when you try to open that file? Does it open in Word?

...thanks for the reply.....everything works fine!...writing, printing, reading, etc...even manually setting the associations up yields no change..

Then it just sounds like you need to reassociate the file type with the program so the icon goes back to normal.

Then its possible that your icon cache is corrupted. Do a search online on how to rebuild the icon cache. There are a few ways to do it. Tweak UI is one way.

....thanks for the reply...however ALL OTHER ICONS are fine.....

Go to your programs folder, open Word, find the application icon. Right click on it and create another one. Drag it onto the desktop. See if it works and the Icon stays the same. If it does delete the old one.

...thanks for the reply but, i am not sure what this solves?...it is SIMPLY that any and all icons pertaining to ANY WORD DOC i have in my computer is screwed up as in my attached picture.....sliding an icon onto my desktop should do nothing and if it is supposed to, please explain what..

I thought you meant that you just had a Word icon on your desktop for the application itself. Misunderstood.

To clarify, the icon does not change even if you manually assign a different icon to the file type? Also, when going to manually associate the icon to the file type do you even see the correct icon?

Can you clarify which operating system you are using?

Although it's not possible to change the default icon in win7 it can be done in XP as PTT has already suggested.

..i went to file types/associations etc and made sure that the word icon was associated with same...after doing so, it still did not change.

********

don't see how that would make any difference but;

win xp pro...sp3...1gb ram, 3.4 processor speed...

Just to be sure:

Go My computer - Tools - Folder Options - File types - select DOC (highlight) Click Advanced - Then change Icon. You will get an assortment of icons to choose from. If what you are looking for is not there then Browse.

See if that does it!

You didn't really answer the first part of my question. I'm was wanting to know if it would change if you assigned any other icon to the filetype. If not, then uninstalling and reinstalling Office might be the only fix.

....it doesn't make sense to me to do this (respectfully) as the "word" icon is just that and assigned to that.....
