Monitor shuts down

Hello,
My monitor (HP f1703) shuts down after some time of work. While the monitor is black, the computer keeps working. I did not time it, but the time interval can be anything from several hours to 5 minutes (happened a couple of times). The only thing (that I have been able to figure out) that returns this guy back to life is unplugging the power cord coming to the monitor from the desktop for 5-10 minutes. When black, the monitor does not respond to its power button (the button does not light as it should in the power-saving mode).
What can cause this problem? Is there anything that can be done to fix it?
Thanks in advance.

When it shuts off is it very hot? I don't know if that could cause it to shut down but that is what I would check first.

Same exact thing happened to me. Your main board on your monitor is probably failing. Either you have to get a new one and change it yourself or send it to a repair shop to fix it. If you have warranty this should be covered. This was my problem. It was randomly shutting down and the on and off button was not responding. :)

Thanks a lot for your responses.

to salvage-this: The monitor is not hot at all when it shuts down.

to lubo4444: Do you remember how much that board was? Did you run some diagnostics before you changed it?

Well it really depends on the monitor. I had Viewsonic when the problem occurred. The motherboard cost was about $55 with shipping charges. I did not run any diagnostic programs because they are none really to run. I did some search on the internet on what may cause this problem and everything showed me it was the mainboard. When i changed it i didnt have random shut downs and my button did respond to my commands. So i'm guessing you are having the same problem.
