sound activated inverter

Does anyone know of good sound activated inverters? I'm talking about stuff like this:

but of higher quality? I'm trying to wire some laser LEDs up to them. Also, does anyone know if I can directly splice a laser LED unit onto that inverter or would it be incompatible?

Considering inverters output around 500-700 volts AC, and LEDs only like 4 volts DC, I'm going to say no. You would not be able to directly splice in an LED into that inverter.

HOWEVER, there are a multitude of sound driven circuits out there that are easy to make. Best of luck.

Thanks for the reply. Yes I realized the high voltage output of the inverter after I posted this . Anyways, i am also looking at general sound driven circuits. I actually don't have much of a background in circuits (though my roommate does, so I might ask him), do you know of any prebuilt controllers out there?

Thats actually not a difficult IC, available at sparkfun and everything. You of course would required a programmed MCU to go with it, which does up the complication of the project.

However, there are a ton of single IC circuits (read: no mcu needed) out there though that can blink an (or a series of) leds based on sound input. The LM3915 certainly looks fun, with the ability to adjust sensitivity and more. The diagram is fairly simple to follow, ask your electronic roomie to help you if you've never soldered/put something like this together. (I will note, laser leds generally pull more current, you'd be wise to use transistors instead of having the leds be driven by the IC directly -- your roomie will know what I mean.)

I understand though, projects like these can look overwhelming and you just want a "plug in and go" solution (like inverters) and sadly I'm afraid I can't help you (Bigfella has the right idea though, most electronic shops should have a kit like this). I do ask though, why not just use CCFL+inverters? Yes they're a bit bigger than an led, but they're usually brighter and diffuse the light better. Or is it just the fact that most sound activated inverters kind of suck?

I'm just trying to explore all my options. All the available computer modding sound inverters are poorly made and barely work. I'm looking for something on a bit bigger scale.
