Belkin Powerline

My current Belkin router supports data speeds at 100mbps. I'm looking at buying a Belkin Powerline kit to supply a connection to an area that can't receive wireless.

Since the router supports such a data speed, would it be a waste of money buying a gigabit speed Powerline kit, up to 1000mbps, since the speed will only reach up to 100mbps anyway?

Thanks for your help,

Andrew

If you get a 1Gbps router, and you have CAT6 cables, and your computers have a 1Gbps Ethernet port, your entire home network will support 1Gbps speeds.

Internet download speeds are dependant on what plan you are on with your ISP, and what the lines in your area support.

For example, I'm on a 24mbps/1mbps plan, but the lines in my area only support 8mbps, so that's the maximum I can get until the infrastructure is updated.

Keep in mind that 8 bits = 1 byte. so 24Mbps equals out to 3MB/s and 8Mbps is equal to 1MB/s - and then you need to allow for some overhead.

Cat6 is just a way to waste money, Cat5e is fully compliant with the Gigabit spec and is around 30-45% cheaper than Cat6.

In order to utilize gigabit speeds, a gigabit switch is required, however a gigabit router is not.

I've tried the 85mbps Belkin Powerlines, and they're really slow at the very top floor of my house. The connection is 23mbps, and even then the connection is intermittent. Meanwhile, in the next room to the router where the Powerline is connected, it is really fast (61mbps).

Would getting the gigabit Powerline adapters make the connection faster? Bearing in mind the fact that the distance will be the same, will the connection be any better?
