i want to make a network fire wall for my home network

cable modem ------ network firewall ---------- wireless router ---------- out to network

i have it set up as cable modem to server, server to wireless router and wireless router to other computers.

the problem im having is i cant connect to the server from the network after all this is set up.

im thinking is a 3rd nic card in the server back to the wireless router.

i know it might sound confusing but i don't know how else to explain it.

sever is just another computer for network storage and mind craft for a few friends

I would put the server on the other side of the router.. then just forward the ports to the server.

port forwarding is nothing but a pain in the a$$

Yes but it leaves you server more secure and will allow you to access the server from your internel network. If you really dont want to mess with port forwarding, just put your whole server in a DMZ zone

im wanting to do all this to firewall my whole network instead of each compurter.

If you want to go with a firewall, and you have a spair computer with 2 NIC's, look into untangle. Its a very easy firewall to start off with and is very powerful. its also open source so no payment on the basic package which comes with AV filter, Spam filter, firewall, intrusion prevention and much more.

yeah untangle is sweet and very sexy looking. Can be a hog though so if your like me and all your computers you have laying around suck try smoothwall or pfsense.

my pay-pal got hack and i don't know how i haven't been on it in months so i want to make sure my computer are secure.they tryed to charge 1000$ to my bank account.

untangle has to have its own computer and im not willing to give that up i have it as a minecraft server and a file server for my network. ill try there other ones thou.

i dont want to have to give up a computer but ill get something on imcome tax

omega is right, most likely the cause of your pay pal account getting hacked as nothing to do with your computer or network security. I would change your password and make sure its very complex.

To add on to that, never click on a link from within an E-Mail, and if you do make sure the URL is completely correct.

i see your point and vagley remember something like that happing.
