i7-930 CPU

The games I want to play are Starcraft 2, guild wars, and eventually both guild wars 2 and diablo 3.

With this current setup I may crossfire the 6870's in the future or buy a 6950/6970 instead if they come out soon enough. My main worries are over what may bottleneck if I crossfire or get a 6970. I picked out a pricey mobo but maybe I can save $100 on a cheaper one?

I'm rather sure there are less expensive Mobo's that will satisfy your needs. For instance, I'm upgrading my rig, and I'm looking at this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131393R
As you can see, I can put a good dual core CPU in it, up to 16GB of DDR2 RAM from 4 memory slots, one modern-tech 1GB PCIE 2.0 GPU, and it has ample support for SATA.

It's $60.

If you're worried about DDR3 vs. DDR2 memory, most resources I have read say that for the time being, DDR2 is more cost effective than DDR3. You'll have to pay a lot more to see any significant increase in performance. This is likely to change in the near future.

DDR2 and DDR3 are the same price right now, and DDR3 already performs better.

What's cost effective about using old hardware...?

You could save money by choosing the Socket 1156 platform...

Looks like I was reading articles from last year

the i7 930 is 200 bucks at microcenter so I was gunna go with that so I would need a LGA 1366 compatible Mobo. There are quite a few 1366 compatible Mobo's that are 100$ less wondering if anybody has had any good experiences with cheaper LGA 1366 intel mobo's. Can i get away with a cheaper mobo without performance loss?

For the cost of everything on that list, you could built a brand new AMD system from scratch, with a six-core Phenom II. I had a built similar to that if you want links.

I would assume, however, that since you have the i7 already, you want to build a system around that. At that point, then, I would say you have a decent setup where you are. Are you triple channeling that RAM?

yes the ram will be triple channeled. I kind of prefer intel chips.
