It is a good drive, yes, and no, you don't need that cable. All that you need is a SATA cable to connect the drive to your motherboard, and a SATA power connector from your power supply.

If your power supply has only molex connectors, which really if it is less than 5 years old, it should have SATA connectors, then you will need a molex - sata adapter, which is something like this:

Read and Write are near as makes no difference identical, yes, but the Vertex 2 is faster at IO operations. It doesn't make a whole lot of difference to be honest, but it is a better drive, on paper at least
