ATI vs NVIDIA

Between ATI and NVIDIA which one makes the better video cards?

Or between these two which one is better?

ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB GDDR5 16X PCIe Video Card

vs

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 465 1GB 16X PCIe Video Card

I was asking because I want something good for video/audio editing/rendering, computer illustration/image editing, and video gaming.

Those are just chipsets. Which manufacturer and model card exactly? There are numerous gtx 465 and hd5770 cards being made, but at different specs and price points. Can you link the two exact cards you're looking at?

They both make quality cards, neither is "better" than the other, they both have different parts of the market tied up.

From the 2 you put, I would have neither, for the price of a 465 you can get a 460, which is an improved GTX465.

GTX460 isn't anything like 460, it's a whole new Fermi core, runs cooler, while it has less stream processors, there are more processing cores per SM

Agreed, or you could get a 6850, which is even better.
You can't compare 5770 to 465, they are aimed for different price points

I am no fan boy but every ATI card I have ever owned I had the same problem DRIVERS. Nvidia seems to update their drives more often (not sure if that is good or bad) but I have not run into any problems in the 5+ years I have used them. My last ATI purchase was a 4850 for a friend and it ended up being such a pain we just went the GTX 260 route.

Not everyone will have this problem but for me it seems to be a never ending worry. I wish ATI did a better job on its drivers though as they are currently pumping out great cards.

BTW buy the NVIDIA GTX465 1GB it is much better than the 5770 could ever hope to be. Here is a benchmark vs the 460. If you want a ATI card get a 5830 as it compares closer to the GTX 465

Yeah its better than 5770, but for less you could buy a 460, which is better than a 465

Just to point it out to the world... The name of ATI does not exist anymore. It's AMD now.

Yes it does still exist, an ATi 5770 is, and always will be, an ATi HD5770. An AMD HD6850 on the other hand, that is not ATi, that is AMD

people enough of this ati and amd stuff, ati is amd, amd is ati.lol

Personally I preferred the name scheme before they killed ATI. AMD is CPU and ATI was GPU...sorted it out and made it simpler imo. Plus they are using the "Radeon" tag on the new 6xxx line of GPU. So it seems to be pretty stupid all around for AMD.

As long as they don't use the new logos on 5xxx i'm good. Planned on picking up a 5870 and I liked the look of them as they are. Hoping these new cards will bring down the costs of 5xxx's though so i'm waiting and will probably pick up my gpu last.

Sounds like the 460 would be the best decision in your price range. If you're looking for something cheaper then the 5770 is a good route too. I own a 5770 and am very happy with its performance thus far. However, with AMD's 6xxx series being released we can all probably expect a decrease in price of the 5xxx series cards soon.

As far as AMD vs. Nvidia goes, that question is too circumstantial to answer. In your case, either brand would be a good decision!

someone mentioned I should post model i edited the post not sure if that's all the information, if not I'm sorry.
Either way thanks also if you guys don't want to look at it basically I want something good for video/audio editing/rendering, computer illustration/image editing, and video gaming.

But it has less vram.. matters at high resolutions and in GTA 4 :P

You would get a card that isn't as powerful, for the same price, just for 1 game? If that was the only game you would ever play, then fair enough, but for just about every gamer, it isn't the case that they only run 1 game.

I'd still take the 460, it is the best for the price

A more powerful GPU more than makes up for it.

Very few people game with more than 1080p, which the 768 will be fine on.

I can't find a bench with GTA4 to directly compare, but looks at all the other games the gtx460 768mb absolutely whips the 5770 at-

I did find this one, the gtx460 768mb is getting 10+ frames better than a 5830-

And in all these benches on this review site, at 1920x1200 the 768mb never falls below 5830 performance let alone the 5770-
