Just as some background knowledge I'm putting together a wish list for my parents to take a look at for christmas. I need to get the price down on the list so they will even consider it.

I'm looking at running a 1080p monitor with a 1366x768 secondary monitor. I will be gaming and using a lot of premiere pro and I was wondering how well the 768MB version will handle hardware acceleration and gaming.

Here are the cards I'm considering:
Gigabyte 768
Gigabyte 1GB
ASUS 768
ASUS 1GB

I made this other post because I believe I will get more responses if I put it in a separate topic under a different sub-forum. I would try to be more patient but I need this list to be done by thursday.

The 460 768MB is a solid card--my roommate has one and it handles everything he throws at it very well.

The 768mb would be enough, they are great cards. Although if you have the extra money, the 1gb is better if you like more eye candy while gaming.

Go for the gigabyte ;)

All I care about is getting 45-60 fps consistently.

So with that question out of the way, what else can I do to get the price down?

No problem there.

Change the ram to this-

G.Skill is a better brand, $10 less, and 1600mhz cas 9 is faster than 1333 cas 8 plus you don't want to give up any overclocking headroom on the ram so better to get faster ram.

Power supply, unless you were dead set on going modular get a corsair 650w-

Will save you $10 up front, plus $15 more than the XFX on the mail in rebate.

Lastly, spend $10 more and get the 880g ASRock board-

The 880g has 8 phase power design VS the 4 phase on the 870. It also has mosfet coolers. Both of those will help overclocking a non black edition quad core because you have to overclock VIA the bus speed not just multiplier. Plus, onboard video is nice to have in case your graphics card would ever fail. That way you aren't scrambling to buy video card real cheap just to have a picture on the screen. It's a nice backup.

i have the 460 768MB.....Solid card,Handles pretty much everything i throw at it and get very good results on high settings,Black Ops runs @ 89-90 ish FPS @ 1680x1050 all maxed.

Bad company 2 in DX11 maxed, again 1680x1050 runs about 70ish + fps depending on whats goin on in game,...its an awesome card.

Got it down to $650 or so. I need it lower though. I like that motherboard but it is more expensive. I was considering micro ATX but I need room for a 460, a black magic intensity pro, and possibly a PhysX card. I'm thinking now I should swap it for an 880G board. (Should stay away from 7xx boards at this point?)
I pretty much want modular... Looks far nicer.

I think I could go down on the case even though I don't want to. Not too fond of the HAF series but HAF 912?

Cheaper HDD? I only need 500GB or so. (I've got an extra 60GB 2.5" HDD)

I'm pretty set on modular... I don't want to deal with all those hardwired cables.

Physx card as in another graphics cards set as dedicated Physx or do you mean a Agia Physx card?....if its a Agia Physx card you mean dont bother its a waste of money :)

A physX card with a gtx460 is worthless. A 460 is strong enough to process graphics and PhysX at the same time and do a better job of it.

You really should spring for the 880g, $10 shouldn't make or break it.

Cheapest 500gb is a seagate, it's an OK drive.

This antec PSU is partially modular, so it gets rid of the excess anyway. It's $10 cheaper up front, but you don't get any mail in rebate (XFX is $10 cheaper after a $20 MIR). Also this antec is 750w isntead of 650.

What else would I need PCI-E slots for?
(I need a x16 and a x1 down the road.)
If there isn't anything, I might as well go m-atx.

EDIT: that seagate had too many bad review for my likings.
