I have Vista on my pc, but wish to g o to Windows7. If I buy the upgrade will I always have to piggy back off of a Vista installation?

I use the upgrade Disks to do clean installs, so no you wouldn't have to reinstall vista just to reinstall 7 if you ever had to.

Thanks. That's what I was hoping.

The restoration disks for my pc puts back (as you know) all of that crap that was originally installed on my computer. Being able to have a clean plate - save for the OS - would be a nice starting point to put that which I did want on my system.

User0one,

I went out to check local prices on the Windows7 upgrade, and found that - at $109 - it wasn't as much as I had thought it would be. I did learn, however, that the XP program compatibility wouldn't be realized unless one of the two upper versions was purchased, and the cheapest of those (professional) was $189. That one is out of my financial ballpark, so I will be getting the upgrade.

Thanks again.

Yes, I am indeed in the USA, and I really thank you for this link. That translates into a bit of savings for me, over what I had recently found. I am sure to order this, and only hope that the XP program compatibility issue is all that it is cracked up to be - with this pro version of Windows7.

All it really is is a different version of Microsoft virtual PC (it allows for easier file transfers between windows 7 and the xp compatibility mode mostly) and an already installed copy of XP.

Oh, OK. Thanks for the explanation. I don't have XP. My OS is VIsta (64).

I thought the XP program compatibility was pretty worthless anyway. I only tried a few non compatible XP programs (Video Editing), but they didn't work.

Actually, I am hampered more by my system being of 64bit design, regarding some of the programs that I have. So, (and as I think deeper on it) the program compatibility feature of Windows7 wouldn't have served any purpose within those concerns anyway - even if that feature was all that it is cracked up to be. One thing for certain is this: at least (after the initial piggyback from Vista) I should be able to do clean installs right from the Windows7 upgrade disk. All that crap that is associated with my system's restoration disks is most definitely unnecessary.

It is also to my understanding that Windows7 is a better marriage to one's PC anyway - especially as I use my system as a DAW, as well as digital darkroom for my photographic efforts.

Thanks again.

How are you hampered by your machine being 64-bit? Pretty much every machine is 64-bit these days. You can still install 32-bit software and hardware into it.

I am so sorry about the misinformation. I've been dealing with quite a bit, lately, and guess that I just confused some things a little.

When attempting to install some of my programs on my current machine, I would receive an error message that the program was not compatible with my version of Windows - with an advisory to contact the program's manufacturer. Because they (those programs) worked just fine on my last computer, I assumed that my current system - 64bit - was the causative factor behind the problem. But I was thinking that my other computer was outfitted with Vista32 when, in fact, I know remember that it had XP on it.

To quote many of the younger set - 'My bad" :).
