Adding Additional RAM

In my computer, I have 3x 2gb DDR3 Tri-channel RAM. I would like to put 3 more 2gb sticks in the available slots in my mobo. Now, I know that the RAM has to be the same MHz, but I have heard that the RAM has to be from the same lot. Now, this information is 5 or so years old, so I am wondering if it still holds truth, or if I can just purchase which ever brand I want.

6 gigabytes is a lot of memory. It very likely is more than adequate for your system. Why do you need more RAM? What programs are you using that are really memory hungry?

Well, its not that I run tons of memory hungry programs, its that I usually keep everything open.

Open your task manager when you have a lot of programs open on your system by pushing Control + Alt + Delete. Look and see how much RAM you are using. I doubt you are using even near 6144 megabytes of memory.

Bollocks. My system (10 minutes ago), hit 5.8GB ram usage 50% CPU installing Adobe CS5 from mounted DVDs. 6GB is very useful.

Most people would agree with me on these forums that 4 gigabytes of RAM is usually almost always more than enough memory for most users. I still use 2 gigabytes of RAM and Flight Simulator X runs okay on my system. But I am also using Windows XP which uses less memory than Windows 7 or Vista.

From what I've read RAM sticks from different manufacturers may or may not work together in a dual/tri channel setup. If all the stick are the same make and model then they will work with each other. If they are not then there is a chance they may not. The best thing to do is buy a 3 pack of RAM sticks from one manufacturer.

the manufacturer is not important any brand will work together. the issue is if they are running at different speeds the will all run at the slowest speed by default. that can make it not run as well
