It looks like my upcoming build will be using a Radeon HD 6870, so I was wondering what kind of monitor I should get to make use of my GPU.

I'm pretty sure I want 22" and 1920x1080 capability. Any recs?

Wow, that IS a great deal. Problem is, I don't think it has an HDMI port.

How much does using an HDMI cable matter?

It is a REALLY killer deal. Actually, after finding that I just ordered 3 of them. Ya never know what you might need one for. :)

There is no problem at all, go with dvi you will be fine, both support HD formats but DVI isn't wired for audio (the big difference). unless you want audio coming out the monitor there is no reason for hdmi.

i completly disagree. after going from dvi on my 25 in 1080p monitor to a hdmi, i noticed a descent amount of difference, although i have an eye for detail. however, using a dvi to hdmi cable or adaptor wont make any difference in quality. only using a hdmi to hdmi cable which will require your video card to have some sort og hdmi output. if your going to get a NEW monitor, then get one that will serve its HD label and go for one that has an hdmi inout on it

HDMI = DVI with HD audio, which his sound card/mobo already has. Plus he has speakers, so he won't be using monitor speakers.

How on earth could you notice the difference in image quality between two things that are the same?

You can run at a HD resolution with DVI.

EDIT: Liking the francais in the title:D

I can't provide a source for this sadly, but I seem to remember hearing DVI can carry higher resolutions than HDMI because DVI doesn't carry the sound. Doubt this holds true now if it ever was due to improvements in the cables though. Either way, I can't imagine there being a difference, let alone a noticeable one, between the two at the same resolution. Its like those ludicrously priced HD cables that are made of solid gold and wrapped in kryptonite that offer the best of the best in visual quality if you feel like taking out another mortgage, yet nobody can tell the difference in quality side by side when they aren't told which display is running which cables. Maybe there's some kind of placebo effect there? kdfresh, maybe you just had a bad DVI cable somewhere along the line.
