Hi everyone.
New member/new post.........please be gentle.

I have a Pentax digital camera which works fine and i am able to save pictures taken, to my laptop without problem.
However i recently returned from a holiday and tried to store all the pictures from a 4gb memory card to my laptop but there is a fault with the memory chip.
When i turn the camera on sometimes the photos are there, sometimes it says no image/sound available, sometimes disc needs to be formated.
Usually when i connet to the usb port a window opens for me to download,it does not with this chip.
When i go to 'my computer',removable disk there is no option to download,it just says needs to be formated.
Obvioulsy this chip is damaged so is there any way i can retrieve my photos?
Any help appreciated.

try running a file recovery program called RECUVA www.piriform.com

Thanks James but sadly it did'nt work. When i turn the camera on now and scroll through to view the pictures, the screen is black with the words 'camera cannot play this image and sound',so when i connected this to the Recuva program, the Recuva program reads 'unable to read boot sector'.

:-(

yes the card would appear to be at fault, but you will have a better chance of recovery if you input the card direct to the pc, do you have an internal card reader ?

No James.
I'm useless with computers doh,but i have a cable that connects from the camera into a usb port on my laptop which is always what i use.

yes its ok connecting via the cable in general, but when your trying to recover your valued pictures, your best chance is to connect card alone, as apposed to via the camera, you can buy cheap external card readers which simply plug into a spare usb port.

also try E A S E U S RECOVERY WIZARD FREE EDITION.

No good with the ****** either.I suppose i could purchase an external card reader, though i think it will also fail to find the images :-(

Thanks for taking the time to try and help though.

ok well only cost a few quid for external card reader, but at worst even if you need to format the card to get it to work, dont overwrite it, format it to the same filesystem as it is now and run the recovery programs again they can recover files even from formatted drives and cards, but do it before you over write it with new files.

let us know how you get on. good luck.

Most of that went right over my head,as i say,i'm a pc numpty. So i will try the card reader option first. That seems less complicated.

So thankyou for your assistance.
