What low end cards are a decent replacement for integrated graphics?

The integrated graphics on my brothers machine just died. He needs a cheap replacement, preferably under $60 I was told.

Now, he isn't much of a gamer but he does play some older games. He also Watches quite a bit of HD content. So basically, what video card would offer the most value for under $60?

I did forget to mention it was running on a 230w Proprietary dell PSU. Also, It has to be half height.

They shouldve asked first.

You will need a new PSU to run any descent GPU. You will need a new case to fit that ATX PSU in. But even before that is decided, im curious as to how you have established that the integrated graphics is not working? Have you connected another graphics card to see if the motherboard, cpu etc are working?

If so, this computer is going to need a rebuild and PSU upgrade to take more powerful grahpics solutions.

Everything runs. The screen has artifacts and what not. I did plug my HD 4350 in it to test that out.

But, He doesn't need anything too powerful. And when I say older games I meant games with something like a Geforce 2 recommended card.

That said, How will a 8400GS run?

Newegg still have one geforce 2 card for sale. But the 8400GS might be able to run with that power supply. The 8400GS power consumption is 71 watts, so it might be possible!

You cannot repeat, cannot put a PCIe card on that PSU. You need 26A on the 12V rail minimum, that PSU will not have that. You need a PSU first off. That may even fix the problem.

no you can, not a good one but you can, Dell and HP do it all the time, a low power one such as a 9400GS or an HD5550 wont stress anything

Mate, you don't even know what PSU it is a apart from a OEM 200W or similar. Please do not recommend PCIe cards on that PSU here. Its not smart ever.

You might be able to trade that Dell power supply in at Newegg or TD for cash or credit towards replacements for psu and video card. You might not get a lot though, but generally you get more for store credit.

You would probably pay more on shipping it out to them than you would get back, unless they pay the postage

I'm confused. So you all are saying, if I send NE or TD all the old crap power supplies I have took out on upgrades. They will give me money for them.

I know its a 230W, I also know a 230W psu will run with a Q6600, 4gb of DDR2, a 500GB hard drive, and a 9400GS ive opened plenty of computers at my shop with that configuration from the OEM. There cards will use about 25W full load and wont stress is PSU unless he has OC'd the system which i doubt considering its OEM. For a low card like this recomending to replace the PSU is wasted money, I promise that much.

What a OEM does is a different story.

Plus Nvidia minimum requirements for a 9400GS is 300W and it can pull up to 40/50W under load.

A 230W OEM power supply, I would be surprised if it even has 130W (if even that) on the 12V rail. They dump alot of the watts on the 5.5/3V rail.

So you are looking at 130 watts at MAX. Being a cheap OEM, running at any thing over 50/60% pull puts alot of stress on it.

Would it work, might so. Would it be the responsible thing to suggest, No.
