Hey guys
I was wondering if you could help me...:)
Can i upgrade the cpu in my laptop, if so to what processor?
the current processor is a bit too slow for me, the processor was
created more for light use, but the laptop could do with a boost.

This is the current cpu, not sure what the mobo is though,
Brand: Sony Vaio VPC-Y21S1E (two months old)
It is running a pentium U5400 processor:
Clock Rate 1200 MHz
Front Side Bus 2500 MHz

any ideas on upgrades or thoughts?

cheers

Upgrading a laptop CPU is hit and miss. It requires a lot of disassembly, with no guarentee that your BIOS will allow an upgrade.

To help u out, look up what processors were factory installed in that system. (I'm on a phone, and can't research, but late in the week I can be more help). Chances are that the BIOS is limited to the factory processors, so try to stay in that list.

Next thing to look at is wheather or not your processor is even removable. I've seen several laptops (hp and lenovo netbooks) that have the CPU sodered to the mainboard. In this case, you would be in for a motherboard replacement to upgrade.

On 90% of modern laptops its fairly easy to get to the CPU/RAM/HDD and CD/DVD. Example, my Dell Inspiron 1420 has three back plates HDD/RAM/CPU.The CPU plate has 4 four screws, that when removed displays the heatsink which is held down by 4 more screws, when thats removed it shows the CPU which can be upgraded(not sodered)not saying that there arent no laptops that dont have there CPU sodered, just that most of the modern can be upgraded. If it comes with back plates(which is there for quick upgrades)95% of the time its upgradable.

BakerJim, just look at the back and see if you have any removable plates.and for the "so to what processor" call sony and they will tell you if its upgradable and what CPU's will work for it.Most likely they have it and will try to sell it to you, dont buy.You can find waaay better deals online.Same thing that happen when I called Dell to see what I could upgrade to,lol.

Edit-the CPU I had was a Intel Core 2 Duo T5450 (1.66GHz/667Mhz FSB/2MB cache) and upgraded to
Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 (2.2Ghz/800MHz FSB/4MB L2 Cache)
