NEW gaming PC build

This is my first time building a gaming computer, i'll have some help from a expert at the time though, but would these parts work with eachother? if so what other parts could i replace for better ones to keep it under 650$ , the current list is about 630$

  • Phenom II X4 965 Black AM3 3.4Ghz 512KB 45NM 125W 4000MHZ - AMD

and if any required parts for the desktop are missing i would appreciate it if you would list it*

So would this be a pretty good gamming pc? im pretty sure im only gonna really play minecraft, so what would the fps be on the higest settings?

You've missed the motherboard, you'll need a socket AM3 one and 2 x 2GB of DDR3, DDR2 won't work. I'd swap out the slow green Hard Disk for a Samsung SpinPoint F3, and the 965 for a 955, they are practically the same.

Corsair XMS3 2 x 2GB - $40 after rebate
Sapphire HD 6850 - $170 after rebate

SATA DVD Drive - $20
SpinPoint F3 1TB - $70
Total after rebates: $650

Will max out Minecraft easily. Do you have OS?

You have no motherboard.

With the Phenom 965 get a AM3 motherboard with DDR3 memory.

The sound card is a waste, not any better then onboard sound.

Go with a western Digital Black/Samsung F3 or Seagate 7200.12 harddrive.

If you are building a gaming PC the sound card is a good idea. Most motherboards do have onboard sound but it is powered by the CPU where the Audigy sound card has its own processor and will free up your CPU for more important things. Won't make a huge difference but if you plan on using high quality sound settings in your games it will def help your framerates and would be worth the $20-25.

They all fit the 955, the best value one out of them would be the second one. I edited my post with a build for $650.

The Audigy SE is junk and isnt going to free up anything. The only time I would recommend it is if your onboard went out and you want to replace it wth something comparable.

Audigy and X-Fi lines both have built in processors for handling sound. That means the CPU doesn't have to. Not really a matter for discussion there are plenty of benchmarks to prove it.

Another thing you might want to consider would be a special network card made by BigFoot Networks. Same basic idea. The card handles all network activity so your CPU doesn't have to. These cards are a little pricey so it all depends on how much you are concerned with squeezing maximum framerates from your system.

This is the last time. The Audigy has the EMU10K2 chip. The SE has the CA 0106 chip. The SE is a software based sound card, your CPU does the work just like a onboard sound chip. Even the new X-Fi audio has the same software based CA 0106 chip.

My mistake. Can anyone say 'scam'..

That being said, sound cards are definitely not a dead technology yet. Features like EAX and 3D positional audio still make sound cards preferable to gamers. Onboard audio has come a long way but it's still got a long way to go.
 
vashonlax - the GTX 460 is a good card but getting a factory overclocked version is a waste of money when there are dozens of free programs online that allow you to do the same thing yourself. Also - check out the Radeon HD 5850. It performs 14% better for 13% more money. This is based on the cheapest GTX 460 and HD 5850 currently on Newegg. If you think youll actually use the mail-in rebate however, the GTX 460 does become a much better deal.
