Do I need a new computer?

Hi everyone, this is my first post so hope you can help me.

I have an oldish computer (PB imedia 1402) and when i try and watch streaming videos on youtube for example or streaming sports its really stuttery (for lack of a better word) although the audio is fine. This even happens when the youtube video is buffered to 100% on the lowest quality. My laptop and brothers computer both have no problems with the videos and my internet is good. I have also updated all my drivers but still no luck.

heres info about the computer

win XP service pack3
intel celeron 2.80GHz
2.81GHz, 1.18 GB of RAM

display properties
SiS 651c 64 mb

do I need to get a graphics card or new computer? really unsure what to do and any help will be massively appreciated.

please ask if any more info is needed.

also I know this pc is far from good enough for gaming, just wanted it for steaming channels as I have connected it to my tv... also if I was going to get a new one, will probably attempt to build it myself so any tips on that front would be great too
 
your cpu is on the poor side, at least duo core is start of decent level, intel are releasing their new sandybridge processors early 2011, if you going to buy or build a new system i would wait for them first, as far as tips for building just google build you own pc, and it will give you links to full step by step guides.

As for your problem here, you may want to check your Motherboard Manufacturers site to see what your motherboard supports. If your 2.8 Celeron is a 775 pin package, then you MAY be able to upgrade to a Core 2 Duo or Core 2 quad.
You may also want to find out exactly what ports are on your motherboard to be able to upgrade your graphics card.
 
thanks so much for all of the replies, I am just wanting it for videos but thought it may be cheaper making a whole new setup rather than upgrading every part thats a bit crappy now. Think I will just try a graphics card then for now and see if it solves the problem of the video.
 
Make sure that you get one that is compatible with your computer. Most of teh older ones come either with PCI or AGP. AGP generally sets farther back on the board than PCI and is brown in colour.
Also make sure that your PSU will support your video card choice.
Based off the computer that you stated in the OP, you have a AGP slot, but its only the origional not x4 oor x8. This will limit your choices some, but you wont need much for just video.
 
from what I have read on another forum, I do have and AGP slot so would this be the better choice?

would I also have to upgrade power supply and fans? Sorry I am really new to all of this but eager to learn and improve with everyone's help.

How come you have 1.18gb ram? it is a bit odd. May be if you can try to upgrade your ram to 2gb, it might make the computer faster.
just a thought.
 
Yea, that should be a good card for you.
As for is it better. Yes, the AGP is always better than PCI. AGP is a wider bandwidth, thus processes the video data faster.
To run that card, i would suggest at least 300 Watts. Check your current PSU as my HP had a 300 Watt from the factory. Yours may well already have a good enough PSU.
AS for other upgrades, none are needed to add that card.

Thats what shows up in Windows when you have a 1GB stick and a 256MB stick. Don't have a clue why it never shows the entire Ram amount. (my laptop only shows 7.8GB)
 
yea. You may have to remove it (4 screws on the rear of the computer). It will be written on a sticker somewhere on the PSU.
