Help with Raid 1 volume

I am running XP, and have a factory controller that keeps two drives as one set.
There are two drives, but both show up as a single drive,C:. It is constantly mirrored from drive 0 to 1

A while back I had one drive fail. I went and bought two identical drives (figuring if one was gone, the other would soon follow). I put a new drive into the drive 1 position, and the controller mirrored it to the other. That is what should happen. I replaced volume 0 with a new drive and it was soon mirrored.

I took the remaining working drive from the old set and put it in the drive 1 slot, and it mirrored it. So, I had a RAID1 setup, with a spare in case a catastrophic error were instantly mirrored to both drives. I tested it and it worked fine.

Then (the flaky part), I decided to update my third drive and put it in slot 1.
The start screen showed that drive 1 was "degraded." I tried every command except breaking the set, and it refused to acknowledge the disk.

I disconnected both working drives and installed the "degraded" disk as drive 0. It booted up and told me that the disconnected drive was missing.

I tried formatting the third drive as a NTFS drive, but it didn't help at all.

This is driving me nuts! What can I do to get the RAID controller to recognize the third disk (taking the second disk's place) and mirror it? Also, when I reconnect the normal drive 0 and 1, both appear as degraded, and they are rebuilt to no harm.:confused::confused:
 
Sounds to me like your computer doesn't know which array is the normal one. You should have left well enough alone as mirroring the third drive won't help you as I'm sure your data will change between now and the time one of the other drives go bad.

Reconnect the original drives and rebuild the array if it says degraded. The second new drive may have failed or was DOA(dead on Arrival).

You'll need to repartition the drive first, then format using NTFS. Cheers.
