PC won't turn on

There are a couple of similar connectors coming off of the power supply, make sure you have the right one.

HUh? There is only 1 connection from the power supply that will work. All the other cables are either molex, sata, or pci express connections. So there is no way he can screw it up.

Bah, I thought he was referencing the separate 4 or 6 pin, not the main 20+4.
 
Im not referring to the 20/24 pin connector. Im referring to the 8 pin connecter for the CPU. The included 2x4 connecter fits, but ive noticed the shape pattern (full square, etc) of the connecter doesnt match the shape of the connecter mounted on the motherboard. Thst seems to be the only thing that would prevent booting (to me) apart from a faulty psu
 
If it's a problem with the CPU power, the computer will turn on for a second, fans move and any lights come on, and then it will shut down a second later. I forgot to plug back in the CPU power one time and went crazy wondering why it wouldn't start. If there's no power whatsoever, maybe it is a PSU problem. Is the switch at the back of the PSU on? :P If you have another PSU you could always try that to see if it works.

That's precisely what happens, so I guess that would be the problem.

How exactly would I go about fixing that? :confused:
 
The 4/8 CPU power connector will only plug in one way. The connector and header are keyed. Sure your not trying to plug it in backwards? Sure your not trying to plug in a PCIe power connector on the CPU header?

No, it's not a PCI-E connector.

It fits in just fine the way I have it plugged in, and doesn't fit in any other way I could possibly plug it in, so I'm a little lost.
 
If its in its in, lol. If this is a new build, did you put the standoffs under the board the right places. Not one where it doesnt go, shorting out on the bottom of the board?
 
Hmm, I don't know, definitely sounds like a problem with the CPU power though, whether it's in the connection, the PSU, or the motherboard.
Have you tried using a spare PSU, or using that PSU on a spare motherboard? Might help diagnose where the problem lies.

Alright, so this is the connector attached to my psu

That said, it still plugs in, but the shape doesn't match up. It seemed to me like that would be the problem, but I couldn't quite find a picture for them, and I've yet to get a replacement camera.

But as I'm not the most knowledgeable person, would that be the problem?
 
If it is split in 2 with 4 pins on each, then both need to be plugged in side-by-side. It should click in rather easily.

They are, and it clicks in easily, I just noticed the shape of the connectors didn't match precisely and was wondering if that would have any impact.

...I do know how to plug in cables :/

Its right. If you notice the 4/8 connector, the 4 pin on the left is keyed so it only plugs in on the correct side.

Edit: Blah, I forgot the perspective of the picture, nevermind that.

So what could be my problem then? Faulty PSU? I don't have another one to test out right away.
 
Problem solved, it was just the psu. Time to RMA I suppose.

Thanks for all the suggestions and information, even if it didn't fix my problem :P
