DirectX10 card? Windows XP?

Hello everyone.

I recently bought my son a "Gaming computer" online. It was "Custom" made and is supposed to be really good. It has a ATI card that is Directx 10 supported however the computer itself is running XP so it is still using direct x 9.

My questions are: Is there a way to get direct x 10 on using XP?

and, if I need to buy windows 7 or vista (I'm guessing 7 is the way to go, right?) how will I get direct x 10?

Thank you very much,

Christian

DX10 does not work on XP. If you upgrade to Vista or 7, it will come with it straight away.

It doesn't really matter at all though to be honest, pretty much every game will work on DX9, and the difference between DX9, 10 and 11 really isn't massively noticeable, if at all to most people

And even if you find results that say there are hacks to get DX10 to work on XP, they lie. It just doesn't work on XP.

Thank you very much guys. Is there certain version of windows 7 that I could get for my son that would be better for gaming or all the all about the same.

Thanks again for the quick response. I'm very grateful. What a cool site.

Home Premium (cheapest version of 7) is fine. If you have a 64-bit machine, I recommend getting 64-bit Windows 7.

Oh great thank you. We are currently running a 32 bit OS so the computer has to be 32 bit as well right?
Not at all, you can run a 32 bit OS on a 64 bit system. Chances are you are running a 64 bit processor, but if you want to be sure let us know what you are using.

I know the processor is a Intel core 2 due 2.67. I'm not sure about any of the other specs if there are any. I hope this is enough info.
