Intel Core i5 460M (2 Cores @ 2.53 GHz )
Intel Core i7 740QM Quad-Core (4 Cores @ 1.73GHz )
Why is the supposed faster CPU (i7) actually slower? I need to run Office Apps (Word, Excel, Access), is the i5 better, worse, no different. I am looking for performance when running 2-3 apps at a time (Outlook, Excel and Access or FireFox). Will multi-threading (i7) do anything for me?! I read that there isn't really any difference (2-5% only) between i5 and i7, is this truly the case?
If I run an single program on either will they be running at 2.53 vs. 1.73 or do the cores have a multiplicative factor (5.06 (2x2.53) vs. 6.92 (4x1.73))?
Where does AMD fit into the picture? What is comparable for laptops with the i5 and i7 chipsets?
Thank you.
