Please read! 890fxa-ud5 will not unlock 550 B.E. stable?

I just got this new motherboard and every time I try and unlock the two extra cores on my phenom II 550, my computer always freezes when I run Windows experience index. It always freezes on the part where it says tuning windows media decoder. Also my computer will just freeze randomly. This does not ever happen when the cores are not unlocked. This really angers me because this is the same processor I was using unlocked and overclocked to 3.4 in my gigabyte ma785gm-us2h for over a year without any lockups or problems at all. My motherboard firmware is updated to version 6 by the way. I'm just wondering why a $200 board is causing these problems when my $70 board never gave me a problem ever. Please help, maybe i am just unlocking it wrong I hope. Thank you.

Your new board might be setting the vcore lower than your previous MB. What does cpuz say your vcore is with that MB...?? ?...1.35vcore...?

Yes upping the vCore may help. However, even on a high-quality motherboard, core unlocking is hit 'n' miss and there's no guarantee you'll be stable.

Yeah I tried upping the voltage in small increments up to 1.4. I emailed Gigabyte about it 2 days ago and they still haven't gotten back to me. Do you guys think i should send it back to get it replaced? Thanks for your suggestions

if you were able to unlock on your previous bored does not mean you will be able to do it on another.that's the way the cookie crumbles.

Yeah I understand, but i figured being the same brand and costing 3x as much as my previous board as well as reading about how everyone else has unlocked theirs, i would think it would be a done deal. Do you think it's just this board in particular and should I get it replaced?

Did you use an 'auto' unlock feature? If so turn it off and try this instead:
In BIOS >
If it has any fan monitoring soft like C & Q, disable that.
Enable core unlock(or 'manual') and turn off or disable cores 5 and 6.

You can also try a nb voltable bump w/ your cpu bump if the above doesn't do it by itself.

EDIT: before that ^, check Gigabyte for bios unlock update fix.

Benny boy, you saved me! I tried upping the voltages but that didn't work, so in my bios it says core 0,1,2,3. All i had to do was disable cores 2 and 3(which makes no sense to me) and it is fully unlocked and stable! Thanks guys for all your help, you have no idea how much I appreciate it. Thanks again

:good::)

Seems like it should have 6 cores listed there.
Briefly looked for pic to no avail.
Did you scroll down all the way?

Oh man, I was wrong. It says in windows that I have 4 cores but when I check cpu-z and 3dmark11 there is only 2.

I'm not sure, but I just disabled the 4th core and ran prime95 for a few minutes and it seems like the 3rd core is stable. It's just when i try and unlock that 4th core. I just can't understand this. The only possible explanation is that the cpu may have been damaged somehow when I was taking the heatsink off the other motherboard. But even thought i really don't think that's possible because i was extremely careful even though the arctic silver 5 cured pretty good on there. (Took a little bit of force to take it off but not much). I'm only saying this because I read somewhere on overlclock.net that this happened to someone else but they had to pry theirs apart with a knife, and thier's wouldn't unlock on their new mobo either.

Yeah on my ga-ma785-us2h all 4 were unlocked and never had a problem. I emailed gigabyte twice 5 days ago and they haven't even read my email yet. Unbelievable

I don't know.
What about the cpu/nb voltages? Seems like that would apply to all cores tho?
Did you try with the 2 native cores and just the unstable one? Leaving the stable unlocked on off? Is that possilbe?

Haven't tried with the 2 natives and the "unstable one" yet. Honestly didn't even think about it! I will try that now.

Alright well this is interesting. It can't be the fourth core, I just tested it with the two native cores and its fine. Can you guys give me a guideline as to exactly what voltages I should try changing? I know I have to change the vcore at least, yet I've already tried that before. But it does seem like when i was testing all 4 cores with the voltage bumped a little, the test would last maybe 15 seconds longer without crashing.
