hello all

so I do quite a bit of traveling... none for work XD

I was wondering if i am able to connect to my home pc/server(if i need to build one) internationally either via remote desktop.. or windows home server or what ever. i know the connection speed will suffer but it would be nice not having to carry an extra harddrive full of previous stuff.

thanks!

it can be done. Besides WOL (wake on Lan) and LOM (lights out management) you can turn on your computer if supported in the BIOS. Don't ask me to explain it. I did it a two years ago on one computer. Yes i would like to do also on my computer newer computer. Not important right now for me. It can be in another state for example and turn it on and access with FTP server or remote software. then turn off.
Trust me. its another adventure. not easy and requires home work. Only one person here knows how with experience here. Maybe he will reply. I would love to see this one take off. My motherboard does support it. its an Intel.

in addition:

i do purchase alot from itunes. I know in a home network you can access your itunes media via their shared computer system. Is that possible to do outside of your home network?

currently my pc is on 24/7...1200watt computer 24/7 sux hahaha so the WOL would be great literature for me to study!

thanks everyone

Remotely yes. use the internet on the remote server.
On the lighter side i hate someone telling me i can't do something. Visit Iraq or Iran and seeing the news on tv that is blocked in the states for access.
it can be done and i won't talk about it. Don't care, its just my adventure. its like a puzzle and ya figure it out. success is sweet. thats what i do.

The easiest utility to set up is TeamViewer, there is no router configuration or firewall adjusting. I haven't experimented with WOL, haven't had the motivation to do so, but it can be done. As tremmor said, do your homework (research) on it and eventually you'll succeed.
I have TeamViewer set up on my f@h rigs that are over 30 miles away from me, it works very well.

I was using RealVNC Enterprise edition. its a lot better now with security. Made some improvments but heard a lot about the one that was mentioned. Mine is older. Worth looking at.

The Wake-on-Lan is very handy if your hardware supports it but lack of it should not be a deterrent. You can have your PC running in your absence and enable the various power-saving settings. The monitor and hard drives can be powered down so the PC is ticking over normally, using minimal power, awaiting your connection. I assume that would wake up the hdds; never tried it myself.

You could make it more power-effective by various means (not detailed). If you are away for a few weeks, running the PC is no different to running a server. No big deal. Test locally before you take a trip!

I mostly use RealVNC but TeamViewer is easier to set up.

LOM is different. Turn the computer off completely. and turn it on.
I think all computers support WOL if the computer is asleep. Not off for LOM.

TeamViewer is great and 'easy to use' application. I vote for it :D
