Something is up with my computer??

It wont start up. You push the power button and the fan on the inside comes on, but the monitor stays blank. At first I thought there might be a disk in the drive cause thats what it sounded like, but when I pulled the side cover off I saw that it was the fan thing. Anyone know a trick to get it to start up? Or maybe know how to take the hard drive out and hook it up to another computer to get the stuff off of it? I might add that I am computer illiterate.

if the fan is starting the machine is powering up, so it may just be a graphics problem so the monitor isnt getting a signal, do you know if your pc has a graphics card or onboard graphics

Im not sure James. Here is a picture of the inside. The fan with the purple circle is the one that is running. It usually doesn't run, well, that I noticed anyways.

I never really hear it. Not like this other computer. This one Im using now runs constant. The broke one didn't before, but does now. Both of these computers are HP's, can I pull the graphics card out of one and stick it in the other?

Ok then it probally is running the whole time, you can pull out the graphics card and put it another one but you will have to find what kind of model the graphics card is and download the driver on the computer you want to put it on.

Do this instead, do you have a port like this on the back of the computer?

If you do plug that cord into the back of the computer not the graphics card but take out the graphics card before you plug it into the original port the computer has.

There isn't another one like that on the back. I took the cards out, but they are different. There is a yellow RCA by it. I tried that on the TV, but that didn't work either.

Ok then your computer is running a graphics card. Um lets see if anyone knows what the problem could be because right now i really don't know what the problem is.

i had the same problem wth my gaming pc... check if your graphics is running and displaying properly if it is then most likely your mobo is the problem turned out my mobo was finished witch sucked as it was a 120 one :(

Possible causes for the blank monitor after the PC has been turned ON:

-Your RAM chips are not properly inserted...
-Your RAM chips are not working properly...
-The RAM chips slots on the motherboard are not working...

SOLUTION TO THIS: Try replacing the RAM chips in the different RAM slots on your motherboard...

CONCLUSION: Non-working RAM chips or non-working RAM chips slots on your motherboard will result into a blank screen even if your computer is turned on...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

-The CPU fan is not working at all...
-The CPU fan is working properly, but is not spinning...

SOLUTION TO THIS: If you did not plug the CPU fan into the right CPU fan entrance on the motherboard,it will not spin even if it's working properly.Look for the title like "CPU fan" on your motheroard and plug that CPU fan which is on your cooler into that entrance which title says "CPU fan"...

NOTE: This CPU fan is VERY VERY VERY important and it should be spinning ALL THE TIME BECAUSE IT COOLS THE COOLER WHICH IS ON YOUR PROCESSOR AND THAT COOLER IS COOLING YOUR PROCESSOR IN ORDER TO PREVENT IT FROM BURNING!!!

CONCLUSION: The computer/laptop hardware automatically turns off itself in order to prevent the damage to your hardware like the processor if it gets too hot because of the non-spinning ventilator on the CPU cooler...

TIP: CPU is the PROCESSOR.The CPU stands for "Central Processing Unit".
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

-The processor is bad...
-The processor cooling paste is bad/burnt out...

NOTE: If the CPU cooling paste is bad or burnt out,no matter how hard the CPU ventilator/fan spins on the CPU cooler,it is not making any effect on the CPU.The CPU coolin paste allow the CPU/processor to transfer the heat on the cooler which is beeing cooled by the CPU fan/ventilator...

SOLUTION TO THIS: Remove the ventilator/fan from the CPU cooler, remove the CPU cooler also and at the end completely remove the CPU cooling paste from the cooler and the processor. After that put the new CPU cooling paste ONLY ON THE PROCESSOR AND BE SURE YOU COVER THE ENTIRE MAIN AREA OF THE PROCESSOR,but not the WHOLE processor. Now put back the CPU cooler and the fan/ventilator on that CPU cooler. If this did not help, try replacing the processor.

CONCLUSION: Overheating of the processor/CPU prevents the computer to show anything on the screen or to even enable the computer to be ON for longer then 2 minutes. That kinda prevents the hardware damage...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

-The graphic card is bad...
-If the graphic card has the fan/ventilator on itself,be sure that it's spinning. If it's not spinning, the ventilator/fan is either not working or it is not plugged into the right fan entrance on your graphic card...
-The graphic card is not inserted in the right graphic card AGP or PCI slot on your motherboard...
-The AGP or PCI slot on your motherboard is bad...
-If your graphic card has the cooling paste on the main chip,it might got burnt out...
SOLUTION TO THIS: Be sure that your AGP or PCI slots are clear and working properly. Also be sure that the graphic card is clean too.Try replacing the cooling paste on the main graphic card chip on the same way as on the processor...

CONCLUSION: Bad graphic card,non-spinning fan/ventilator on it or burnt out cooling paste on the main graphic card chip WILL cause the black screen even if your computer is running for no matter how long...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

-The monitor is not working at all maybe...
-The monitor is plugged in the wrong entrance such as VGA or DVI...

SOLUTION TO THIS: First check that you did NOT plug the monitor in the built-in graphics VGA or DVI entrance on your motherboard while the graphic card is inserted in your AGP or PCI slot on your motherborad. You MUST plug your monitor in the right VGA or DVI entrance on your GRAPHIC CARD!!!You can also try plugging your monitor in the built-in VGA or DVI entrance on your motherboard if you have it,BUT BE SURE THAT THE GRAPHIC CARD IS OUT THEN!!!If that did not help, try replacing the graphic card or monitor or both...

CONCLUSION: Bad graphic card or monitor or even both WILL cause the blank screen while the computer is ON...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

-BIOS has blocked completely...
-Wrong BIOS settings such as voltage, mhz, memory hole...

SOLUTION TO THIS: Completely unplug your computer from the power source, remove the small 3 V CMOS battery out from the motherboard and then press the power button to release/spend the left-in power from the computer...Leave your computer like that for at least 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, return the CMOS battery back, put back the power source and turn on your computer. Now go into the BIOS and load the OPTIMAL DEFAULTS,save them and restart the computer using the right BIOS option for that...

CONCLUSION: If the BIOS settings are adjusted wrong,it prevents the computer to even pass the BIOS and boot at all. This is good because that prevents the motherboard to burn out if the BIOS options like voltage or mhz are set to the higher level then it is allowed...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

-The fan/ventilator in the power unit is not spinning at all...

SOLUTION TO THIS: Check the ventilator functionality and be sure it is working. If it does work, check that the wires are attached to the right place on the chip in the power unit.If this did not help, replace the non-working fan/ventilator or the power unit or even both if neccessary...

CONCLUSION: The ventilator/fan in the power unit MUST BE SPINNING ALL THE TIME!!!

Well these were few things that can cause your problem. So try all this and report back with the results.

Cheers to all chocolate milk drinkers!Chocolate milk rocks!YEA!!!!!!!!!! :D

I might at that my computer has become REALLY slow over this past month or so. Would that be the processor?
I moved the ram, monitor works, cpu fan is turning. I guess that leaves the processor and graphics card. I put the hard drive in my other computer as a slave and got some of my pictures and stuff off of it. I couldn't access the desk top folder for some reason, it said "access denied". If I could somehow get into the desktop folder to get the stuff that was saved there, I wouldn't even mess with getting that computer working again.

Don't do it through Windows operating system.Try to access the DESKTOP folder/directory with the Linux Ubuntu version 9.04 CD.Find the Linux Ubuntu 9.04 ISO image on the internet, download it,burn it to the blank CD-ROM disk and insert it into your CD/DVD-ROM drive. Now turn off your computer,PLUG THAT HARD DISK DRIVE IN and then turn ON your computer and boot from that CD by choosing ENGLISH as the language and then select the first option called TRY UBUNTU WITHOUT ANY CHANGE TO YOUR COMPUTER.

NOTE: Select that first option by pressing the ENTER button on your keyboard ONLY ONCE.It can take few seconds before it starts loading!!!

Cheers!

i had the same problem too. check and see if your processor busy light (the orange light below the power button, but im sure you knew that :). is going orange. if not, then it's either your cpu fan or your cpu.
