Coming From a Mac, trying to build new system

Hi everyone, I'm a long time apple slave and now that my current computer is dying I need to replace it. After some research I decided that I want to make the switch. I've been looking into buying a computer from dell for quite some time but the more I read, the more I want to build my own computer. I have a few questions and concerns.

When a Dell breaks, for example, Dell's warranty deals with the whole computer. When a component dies on a custom built computer I've been told that getting parts warrantied can become an issue because manufacturers play the blame game and make it excessively difficult to get replacements. Is this true? If my computer breaks will I be hard pressed to remedy it?

I'm completely new to building computers so picking components has been a bit tough. I have a system built up, just a pre purchase general idea of what I might want but then again it could totally be something I don't want. I'm a college student I don't game currently but I'd probably pick some up just to mess around with. I do a lot of browsing obviously as well as some photo editing and some tiny bits of video editing here and there. My music collection is extensive and mostly in WAV or flac but I have a DAC so a ridiculous sound card is unnecessary.

Here is a list of components I have included in my preliminary build:

1. G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) Memory
2. Rosewill RG530-S12 530W PSU
3. Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB 3.5" Hard Drive
4. Intel Core i3-550 3.2GHz (considering changing this to an i5)
5. HIS Radeon HD 4670
6. LITE-ON Black SATA DVD-ROM

So there it is, my feeble attempt at putting together a decent computer. Any help would be appreciated. Changes are welcome, I'm clearly not set on this configuration. Any input is very appreciated. Thank you.

P.S. Sorry for the long post but I figured the more information you have the better you can help me.:D

Warranty - Every single manufacturer works off 1 system - if they can't prove it was your fault, your warranty is fine. If there are no signs of physical damage and if there are no failures due to you messing up the settings in the BIOS, they have to repair or replace your hardware.

If anything, it is better than your prebuilt companies, because you get more warranty, and should you keep parts as you upgrade, if anything does go wrong, you just slip in your old parts, and you still have a system whilst your "new" one is out of business

To actually give you help on a list of parts though, a budget will be needed and what country you are in so we can use the correct stores. Also, what sorts of games will you be playing?

Sorry, all that writing and I completely forgot my price range. I'd like to keep in under $800.00. I live in california but I was planning on purchasing my parts online. Bad Idea? Don't know what games yet but the gaming is a plus. In fact lets forget I ever said it. I really just want a fast computer capable of multitasking.

I would, however, wait until March if you can and swap to Intel Sandy Bridge. They were released in January but had a design flaw so were recalled. The now fixed motherboards should be back on the market in March, and the power of them for the price is exceptional.

Either way, the system will be able to multitask with everything that you need to do very well, and be able to game with everything on highest settings at high resolutions
