Okay, after much thought and consideration I've put together my army friend's rig:

I need to shave enough money though to get it enough under $3000 that I can get a mouse (I also need a mouse recommendation). Any other suggestions would be awesome as well.

GPU - I don't see GTX 580 really worth the money, unless you are looking at another GTX 580 for SLi in future. 6950 with crossfire probably be better value for money


CPU - don't see the point of i7 980X. Personally would get i7 960 with a good cpu heatsink

SSD - Don't see the need of 120GB for OS and programme. 60GB probably be enough

HDD - Personally would get samsung F3 1TB

Optical drive - Get blu ray combo, not blu ray rom.

RAM - Do you really need 12GB?
 
Well, don't you just like to be critical, haha. The GPU, CPU and PSU are the main ones I wanted people to look at, cause I wasn't sure of my self.
As the the hard drives. 120 is definately preferred especially when you have windows 7 ultimate and Wow on it. And Unless the samsung is about the same price it's not really worth it. beyond games, he doesn't use much space at all.
and the RAM was a deal or something so I went with it. besides, the mobo has triple channel! haha
 
I know you've aleady thought about this build, but I'm wondering if by the time a 3rd GPU is needed, new tech would be wanted. The psu is out of balance for 3 GPU's. Perhaps a good 2x SLI mb?
Looks like WoW and MMO's benifit enough to warrant being on an ssd.
Are we going to game on that slimline keyboard?
No worthy combo's available?
 
I went with 2 6950's in crossfire instead as well as an i7 960.

As for the accessories, those aren't solid. Just threw them in there. Though I do recommend the key board. My favorite of all time.


This build won't be upgraded for its life time so I imagine what's in it will be fine til it gets scrapped or sold
 
If you don't have Newegg e-blast, get it.
Several items right now/tomorrow last day(or till out of)/that pertain to this build.
Save $30 on that RAM kit.
Save $30 on a 23.6" Hanns.

edit: for 2 x 6950 you could do 850w and have headroom

I don't know. 850 cuts it just a little. Will consider it though.

Total power consumption of the system of dual 6950 would probably be around 500 - 600W. Considering some overclocking, 850W should be enough.
 
850 watt is fine a guy in another forum said he had two 6950s overclocked and his i7 at 4Ghz and the most power draw he'd seen was 580 watt using 3dmark to stress the comp, so iwoudl imagine you would still be fine if you unlocked it to two 6970s

If your spending that much money on a rig would you not consider waiting until Q3 for LGA 2011 to come out?

Its not my rig. He wants it when he gets home in april. Eh what can you do?
 
12gig of RAM is an absolute waste of money. Maximum RAM I would ever recommend to a gamer, is 6gigs. Almost all video games are 32bit applications, meaning they can only access memory to a maximum level of 32bit memory addressing. Which means that 99% of video games can only use a maximum of 4gigs of RAM, leaving you 2 gigs for your OS if you were to have a total of 6gigs.

Never ever buy more than 6gigs of RAM unless you are doing some extreme multitasking or using really high end 64bit apps. Even with 6gigs you could play a game at max settings, tab out open up a web browser, stream groove shark, watch a movie and still at the same time have enough memory to keep that game running.
 
Some ppl manage pagefile with their ssd's. Some don't.
Some, like me, have no pagfile or manage the size to 0.
Lots claim they're fine doing that with 4gb RAM, I couldn't.
