Really high ping?

this has happened alot before. whenever i get on to bc2 mw2 tf2 or ql, my ping is HIGH. i have no idea why it is so high, but when i look at other people that have the same isp as me, but only like less than 1mb higher than me, they have low ping

as you can see my ping is really high, but like i said, i have seen people who have less than 1mb higher than me, choose this location, but it was over 950 miles, more like 1450 miles, but still have low ping. please help me!!! Even in areas closer does it still have high ping, like this one

To my knowledge, i only know one reason that you could have a high ping. Pinging (the actual process) Bounces off of other nearby routers and/or connections, and uses them as a "power source" for your internet, in a way. All of those connections are powered by the Server, which in your case, would be Dallas. I could be wrong, but based on the picture you posted, it makes sense to me

Ping can be affected by many things other than distance or speed. How is your network connected? Are you running a router? If you are, then I would connect the computer straight to the modem, and try again. It could even be a faulty modem, but, it's a bit early in the thread to determine that. Just disconnect the router, connect the computer to the modem, and report the results.

ya, i have a router, but my computer is hooked up to the router. my laptop is hooked up wireless, but whenever i'm playin games on my computer, it's off so ya...plus it's a modem that verizon gave to me, so idk if that affects it at all, but i do have a 2wire here ready for use

I meant just run the computer straight through the modem for experimentation, just to make sure it's not the problem with the router.

ya my computer is hooked up to the router with ethernet. it's a modem/router. but i guess all routers have a modem in them lol.

Ah, sorry, it's a modem/ router combo? I wasn't very assertive there lol Well, have you done a diagnostic repair on the computer in question's ethernet adapter?

An ISP's performance can vary from area to area, and the speedtests you've posted really aren't outside of what I would expect. Unless you know someone else in your area that is getting significantly better performance than you I would think that your high pings are a result of your ISP rather than anything else.

What kind of service is this? (Most people have DSL, Cable, Satellite, or mobile broadband)

edit: I just noticed you're on verizon. Is that one of those routers that hooks up to the local cellphone network? (AKA mobile broadband)

If so, that's likely to be the problem...mobile services were never designed for super-low latency. I can usually get around 150ms on mine though, using my phone as a 3G modem. It starts way high (700+) when I join the server and slowly works its way down.

it's DSL. although it is the lowest service they can provide, 1.5 mb/s, but i might be upgrading to 3mb or even 7.1, but that will be about another year and a half now.
