Newbie - Gaming PC..which one is better of these two??

Hey all..I am purchasing a gaming system for myself and have narrowed it down to two machines becuase I can get them for cheap. Catch is one is a desktop other a laptop...I love the idea of a gaming laptop because I am not confined to one area, but am unsure if it is comparable to the desktop.

Desktop specs are:

Intel Quad Core 3.0Ghz /w direct heatpipe contact stack cooler Q6600 OC
MSI p43-c51 motherboard
8GB DDR3, 500GB hard drive
EVGA 8800 GT 512MB
OCZ modular 500W
PSU Antec 300 Chassis
SATA LG DVD-RW /w lightscribe

Laptop Specs are:

Gateway FX P7805u

- Windows 7 Pro - Genuine
- 4GB Ram
- 280 GB HD - Only OS installed, nothing else.
- Nvidia Geforce 9800M GTS Cuda - 1GB
- Intel centrino 2. 2.26 ghz
- HDMI and Firewire 1934
- 17" screen 1920x1200

Any help would be great thanks
 
If you are gonna be gaming, then don't restrict yourself to a laptop. The desktop would be better but it already is running on old technology even though its a great processor.

Why don't you build yourself a new system that isn't outdated?

$300 is why lol...cant build much for that. I know down the road the processor will be dated and ill need a new mobo but it should run everything ok no? And on the laptop..is it comparable to the desktop? Are they ok for gaming?
 
The laptop isn't really comparable, no. The desktop's processor is more than twice as powerful, and its graphics card is roughly 20% faster than the laptop's. The GPU is the bottleneck in both cases, so the desktop won't game too much better than the laptop, but you can always upgrade the graphics card on the desktop, whereas the laptop is stuck with whats in there.
 
desktop is much much better for gaming but i myself game on a laptop and dont have too many problems with it and mien isn't that top spec (its got 1gb dedicated graphics card and 2.13ghz CPU 4gb RAM)
