3 week old desktop, any maintenance tips(windows7)

would like some advice from those more knowledgeable in the area about maintaining my system. I use this desktop mainly for school, some google, and You Tube. I would like to keep it running at its peak, who doesnt.
What steps should I take to keep it running at its peak? I have Malewarebytes and Avira free anti virus installed at the moment also. Thanks

I have windows 7 pro and defrag about once a month.

Get the free ver for malaware http://www.malwarebytes.org/
That was posted for someone else that might not know.

Get CCleaner free also to clean up.
If ya don't like defrag with windows you can
get Defraggler from here free.

I think thats it mostly. Try to keep the tower off the floor if possible.
Don't forget to blow out with some air. I take the tower outside
pop the side cover and use static free air from an office supply or where ever.
Keep it cool

If you have not made a restore disc or you pc manufacture did not provide you with one then please make it a.s.a.p. This is the best maintenance you could ever do, all that other stuff is great for simple issues but this will protect you from a "worst case scenario" situation.

Have to agree with that. The feature for backup is provided in the pro ver of windows 7. Did a clean install, Installed favorite programs, took the updates, got all the hardware working properly and updated then backed up.
That probably was 80% of my installs. Another internal drive is convenient. After that with family pictures and such i sync the files for backup to the other drive as needed. sync backup and briefcase is built into the system.

You do not need to defrag as often as you think. You only need to defrag when you install programs and then uninstall them. Normal everyday use won't frag up your drive. I'm lucky if I defrag once every 6 months.

There are certain defrag programs that will make it so you don't need to defrag, or extremely rarely, because they prevent rather than cure. I know O&O for one does it, but I don't know if there are any free ones that do it, as you have to pay for O&O.

It runs in the background and keeps everything in the right place, how it does it on the technical end, as in how it is written, I don't know, all I know is it works very well at keeping everything nice and defragmented.

There are more things that you can do besides defragging through that will yield better results, but defragging never hurts

I agree. I do not defrag often. When im in the mood and doing a clean up mostly. Looking at programs i have not or will not be using. Installing and uninstalling. I will look at the frag on the drive.

Thanks guy I am going down the list if items that need attention. I got a question , I have the CCleaner and have use it on another PC for about 1-2 years. I am going through the windows 7 system and came up with a question. Does the windows system DISK CLEANER do the same thing that CCleaner does?
Also the defrag on windows 7 seems to have a default that does the defrag every wedsday in the AM hours.
My main issue right now would be creating a back up. If I have the wondows 7 cd do I need to do this?
