Help with Video Codex (Best Free ones)

I am looking for Codex advice.
All was fine with my Dell P4 2.8Ghz XP machine (don't laugh it works), but decided to upgrade my codex. It was working fine with Windows Media Player (WMP) and Media Player Classic (MPC) with all the typical files, AVI, MPEG, WMV, but they did not play FLV or MPEG4. I was using two stand alone players just for FLV and MPEG4 (SMPlayer and Splash Lite).

I down loaded K-Lite Mega and achieved payback of MPEG4 and FLV files with WMP and MPC players. It slowed down and quality I think is less, but they do play MPEG4 and FLV files. The one obvious issue is Media Player Classic can not play all WMV files consistiantly. I downloaded and installed DivX (which I think is free) and loaded it to fix the above issue (now I have two codex installed). Still have the WMV play back issue with the MPC player. WMV files play fine with the WMP.

ffdshow is another free one I am thinking of loading, but don't want to run into conflicts. I would like to get rid of the two FLV players and get back to just MPC and WMP with the min codex installed to get the job done.

I know the NVIDIA PureVideo is a good commercial codex package.

I already wrote I have K-lite-mega above. I was having problems with K-lite mega... I did a few things, and it seems to have cleared up the issue, which I mentioned. I use MPC and WMP for playback.

just download vlc player here http://www.videolan.org/vlc/. VLC plays every format (for more see here http://www.videolan.org/vlc/features.html) Oh and question how much ram do you have and of what kind

I have heard good things about VLC..... I just use MPC but have to give it a try. Thanks.
 
I could not get my WMV videos to show with WMP, keep saying I was missing codecs. I was using Chrome. I switched it to windows explorer and rebooted 1-2 and the vids came up with no problem. Try using windows enternet explorer and get updates and let it reconfigure your system and see if that helps.

Thanks for the info... some how the codec gene has granted me bug free video viewing on Windows Media Player (WMP) and Media Player Classic (MPC) now? :good: .... WMV and MPEG's are playing well on either player .... AVI was never an issue.

In my attempt to fix it, I deleted DivX plus (which I loaded on-top of K-lite to try and fix the problem, but it did not help). I also hit the MPC reset to default button just for grins and rebooted. What ever I did, it seems fine now. As a bonus I can now can play MP4, FLV and MKV, on either player, which was my goal to start out. It looks great, and the audio through my stereo is spectacular.

PS - I tried the VLP player... it has lots of user configuration and fancy features, but it's a CPU hog. My slow computer is almost pegged during playback, where the WMP and MPC are about 30% to 40% for the same video. Thanks for the help. MPC is a perfect stripped down player. WMP is well supported and has the Live365 Radio, but I use WinAmp ShoutCast for internet radio or Pandora Radio (recommend). Any way all seems well now. Codec installation is kind of touchy. When they work they're great, but setting them up seems to be hit or miss from my experience.
