i understand that an sd card in a phone uses this technology, yet no laptops or pcs use ssds yet.

is it too expensive or is there another reason?
 
Do you mean SSDs (Solid state drives in general)? Yeah some laptops and PCs use them. SD cards are impractical as a replacement for a HDD as they cost way too much for the small capacity you're getting.
 
Yeah I just saw a 2 gig SSD for around $8,000. Not cost effective at all. Still would be worth getting a smaller one.

And SD cards do not work as a hard drive replacement because they are way too slow. And SSDs are becoming more prevalent. They are mainly used as boot drives as to speed up the overall responsiveness of the system.
