Choosing a video card

I was wondering how to choose a GPU, l have quite good info about CPUs, not sure how to choose a GPU.
GPU I see most dealer tell the memory 1GB, 2GB etc. What about the clock speed?
What does the performance of the GPU depend on?
I assume the clock speed. The GTX 560 had more clock speed than 570 and 580 in one website and lower price. Please explain me how to choose a GPU for extreme gaming.

Clock speed can only be compared when you're looking at identical cards, e.g. a GTX 560 clocked at 850Mhz is faster than one clocked at 800 Mhz. You cannot compared the clock speed between GTX 560 to a GTX 570 or 580 because there are other factors that come in play, such as shader units and ROPs.

Basically there's not one thing you can compare to tell which GPU is better. It's a pretty sure bet though that within a same series (GTX 5xx, HD 6xxxx) that a higher numbered card will out perform a lower numbered car.

The 560 has 384 Processor Cores and 256 bit memory. The 570 has 480 Processor Cores and 320 bit memory. The 580 has 512 Processor Cores and 384 bit memory.

Hmm, which one is better? GTX 570 or radeon 6950?

Your comparing a 275 dollar card to a 350 dollar card. Price vs. performance they are pretty equal. But the 6950 can (maybe) be flashed to a 6970.

Based on tests done that I looked up, the 570 is better. It requires more power, and is more expensive I believe, but it is quieter and faster, even with overclocking both.

If you have the money AMD 6990 is the way to go for extreme gaming. I have seen some reviews and that thing is unbelievable yes it maybe 31cm but if you have the case to handle it it is the fastest gpu "in the world" atm anyway :P.

Yes I have seen its reviews, but its not worth it. It is the best of the best, but I am just going to run 2 screens and do medium video editing and extreme gaming.
BTW I have seen videos in which people have crossfire 6990, definitely not necessary lol.
