Paging File Size

Hello all. I want to use all my memory as efficiently and as fast as I can get it. I know the paging file size matters and it effects it. My specs are in my sig, but to clarify, the RAM I have is G Skill PC-3200.

Right now my paging file size for my 32GB SSD is:

Initial size (MB): 2046
Maximum size (MB): 4092

And my 120GB drive has no paging file.

What would the best settings be for me? The only games I really play are Call of duty: Black Ops and MW2. Other than that, I use the computer to produce music and watch movies, and surf the internet, etc.

Would changing the settings on any of these increase performance at all?

And yes, I realize my rig isn't the most up-to-date, but it works for what I need.

I know XP isn't the best for SSD, but on further research, one website says to turn off paging file for my SSD. Would this be good?

Generally you want to turn off pagefile on SSD. The idea behind this is that SSD has a limited amount of writes and pagefile is accessed thousands of times a second. Which, could ruin your SSD when the SSD hit its write limit.

For your particular setup I would move your pagefile off to your HD. It would be slower, but the computer anticipates and knows HDDs are slower and generally compensates for this anyway.

Running 32 bit XP, your initial and maximum sizes are adequate.

If you really want a boost in speed/usability get more ram.

Pagefile can be turned off(managed to 0) if you have enough RAM to hold everything you do. @ 0, no data is swapped from RAM to drive(when xp decides it needs more RAM), and from the drive back to RAM if that "swapped" data is requested. So if @ 0 and you don't have enough RAM for what you ask the computer to do, then the program will not work, or crash.

If you have enough memory already, then I would just move pf to the HDD so as not to be using my SSD space.

Well, my Mobo can't handle any more RAM, so I guess I'll turn off paging file size on my SSD and put the same preferences to my HDD. Great help, thanks guys!
