Hi all,

I'm just trying to find out if my D600 contains a 'current limiting' motherboard which will be suitable for charging my camera through the USB.
Have not had much luck on the Dell website - probably me.

Thanks.

Geoff, I'd recommend you find some other way to recharge your camera, either by using a 'wall-wart' USB charger or an externally-powered USB hub between camera and computer

almost everybody charges there camera from the computers usb.

... and one out of every three people smoke. Doesn't mean it's a good idea.

Alright, here's the lowdown-- the computer has a chip called the Southbridge, which is the primary input/output interface for the processor. It handles communications with various busses such as IDE, SATA, PCIe, USB.

The Southbridge USB drivers can supply a certain amount of current to the USB port 5v line to power USB devices. In some Southbridges, notably in certain Intel chipsets, an excessive load on the USB port can physically damage the chip.

The chip that not only handles USB, but also communications with your hard drive.

At least if you blow the USB driver on the Southbridge of your desktop, you can get an add-in card to replace USB functionality. You can't very well do that on a laptop, can you?
