I have had a wireless router fitted last week and after 2 days i could not get one of the site i use everyday. It lasted for 2 days then i got back onto the site, they have had no trouble with thier site. Now it has happened again and when i clicked on Diagnose Connection Problems it comes up with,The DNS Server is not responding.Any help out there,i know nothing about computers so please keep it simple.

When you click on a link, your PC asks the remote DNS Server what the IP address is. For example, the basic Google site would be translated to 209.85.225.104 and that is what your PC/router uses. If the DNS Server is down or the wrong server is in the router, that translation does not occur.

Who installed the router? If it was done by your ISP, they should have put all the correct settings in. What make and model of router do you have?

Hi Nanobyte thanks for answering,it's a Netgear N150 ADSL2+Modem Router.
My son fitted it and said if it plays up all i have to do is pull all the leads and plug them back into my old modem, does that help in any way.

Hey mate,

Is it our site that you are still having problems with?

If you try to go on it from another computer on the same network, can that connect to it? (ie. is it just your computer that is having problems, or every computer on the network?)

Sorry about the delay. Is it just one site that is a problem or is it a general issue?

The quickest way to see if the DNS Server is an issue is to use the data I last posted. Try connecting to Google with a browser in your normal way. If you cannot get through, put 209.85.225.104 in the address bar of your browser and see if you get through to the generic page.

Try turning off power to the router, leave for a few seconds and turn on again. Try your browser again. If still not working, see below.

Whether you can do anything about a wrong setting depends. You need to be able to get into the router, username and password needed. If you don't have those, hope your son was not diligent!

In the address bar of your browser, enter 192.168.0.1
A login screen will appear. Enter the details if you know them, otherwise:
admin for the username and password for the password. If admin does not work, try admin: The manual is ambigious and looks like it has a typo. All lower case.

Bypass any firmware update screens and get to the Basic Settings page. In the Domain Name Server (DNS) Address section, check that "Get Automatically from ISP" is checked. That is the most common setting. If for some reason your ISP does not support DHCP then you would need to know the settings provided by the ISP.

Report back on what you find. You can bypass the password by doing a hard reset of the router but then you have to enter the configuration again, which you may not want to do, nor have the details handy.

The other settings are TCP/IP details in your PC. For now we will assume they are correct given the other modem apparently works.

Yes Aastii it is your site only, will get the wife to see if she can get it on her laptop later.
Nanobyte yes just one site that is a problem, the password and username i have but beening on the thick side i would not know what to do with them.I cannot uderstand why it worked for 1 day and then stopped. Thanks for getting back to me and you Aastii.

All sorted thanks to my granddaughter, she changed the preferred DNS server and it worked.:D

Another problem cropped up,Steam is currently in Offline Mode.
(To go online, connect to the Internet and restart Steam.)how do i sort this out. When i go online and click Google for Steam i put in my user name and password and the store comes up,how do i get my library to come up.

Open up Steam, and on the top bar click Steam > Go online...

It will prompt you to restart Steam, do so, and you should now be back to online mode

Back online with Steam but cannot get Black Ops now. Also cannot get the site again. What would be involved with putting my old ADSL modem back.Help please i'm getting desparate.

If you want to reconnect to your old modem, it may be as your son says. I assume it was an Ethernet connection so you could reconnect your PC to the modem with the old Ethernet cable.

Your ongoing problems may be due to selection of DNS Server. As I said you should use automatic selection from your ISP if possible. You could try some of the well-known free servers like Google 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 or Comodo 156.154.70.22 and 156.154.71.22.

Where's your granddaughter when you need her!

I have no idea how to do any of what you have said.I will just have to put up with the crap untill my son comes down next month. Thanks for your help chaps.

Aastii, is there a reason why Computer Forum is difficult to access? I've seen that commented before.

Russb, I'll revamp my earlier comments to incorporate your responses. There's no reason to wait a month.

1. Open a new window or tab in your browser
2. In the address bar of your browser (where the http address of the site you are connected to appears), enter 192.168.0.1
3. A login screen will appear. Enter the Username and Password that you have and hit OK
4. Bypass any firmware update screens by clicking Cancel or Back.
5. Get to the Basic Settings page. Find the Domain Name Server (DNS) Address section
6. Write down the 2 addresses in that section

Up to this point you can exit with no affect on settings by logging out. The manual does not show the logout - I assume it's a tab or menu item. If you are in panic mode simply close the window. You may still be logged in but the settings will be unchanged.

7. Check "Get Automatically from ISP". Click Apply at the bottom of the page. Go to the other tab or window that was already open and try connecting to your sites.

8. If that does not work, check "Use these DNS Servers". In the first row enter 8 8 8 8 (one in each box). In the second row enter 8 8 8 4 (one in each box). Click Apply at the bottom of the page. Go to the other tab or window that was already open and try connecting to your sites.

9. If that does not work, time to give up! Enter the DNS server numbers you wrote down (that your granddaughter entered).

10. Log out and close the page.

Nanobyte when i enter 192.168.0.1 a login screen does not appear for me to enter my username and password. All i get is this,Sponsored Links

Definition: The IP address 192.168.0.1 is the default for certain home broadband routers, principally various D-Link and Netgear models. This address is set by the manufacturer at the factory, but you can change it at any time using the network router's administrative console.
192.168.0.1 is a private IPv4 network address. Home routers can use it to establish the [default gateway. On such routers, you can access its administrative console by pointing a Web browser to http://192.168.0.1.

Any brand of router, or any computer on a local network for that matter, can be set to use this address or a comparable private IPv4 address. As with any IP address, only one device on the network should use 192.168.0.1 to avoid address conflicts.

Maybe i'm doing something wrong but it's getting very frustrating.

I took the address from the manual. Here's how to find it:

Start > Run > type cmd
In Win7, Windows logo key + r > type cmd

At the prompt, type ipconfig
In the short listing will be the IP address of the default gateway (your router)
Note down and use that address to login to the router

Go back to my post #13 (top right of box). Instruction 2, instead of 192.168.0.1 put in the gateway number you noted from the ipconfig.

Nanabyte,(Aastii, is there a reason why Computer Forum is difficult to access? I've seen that commented before.) i'm 65 yrs and disabled if it were not for people like you and Aastii having the patience to help us i think a lot of people would not bother.I am still trying to sort my problem out but it takes longer for things to sink in,so because i might not get back sooner dont think i have forgotten what you are doing for me.Thank you again.
