improving speed

I recently bought a used laptop. Gateway MT3705. CPU 1.60GHz, RAM 958MB,32 Bit. Will the speed improve with upgrading to 1 GHz of RAM? My desktop with similar specs is much faster.

You already have 1GB of RAM, but the integrated graphics card will eat a bit of it, so it shows less. Open up the laptop and see whether the RAM is in a single 1GB stick or 2x512MB sticks. If it's a 1GB stick, you can go and buy another of the same type and speed, plug it and it should be a whole lot better.

If it's in 512mb sticks you'll need to buy 2x1GB sticks.

Also what OS are you running? I'd also recommend running CCleaner and Defraggler to speed up your system.

I am running Vista home premium. Had issues and did a clean reinstall. Used cd that came with my Dell desktop. It sure uses a lot of space on the hard drive. Drive seems to be into two parts, C and D (recovery). Can parts of Windows be removed to gain more space? Sorry for the newbie questions but I am a NEWBIE. Just had hard drive replaced on my Dell XPS 410 and it is not in two parts. Upgraded Dell to 2G of RAM. Thanks for the help and your patience.

That laptop has a max memory of 2gb, which you will still have issues with running Vista. You should have at least 3 gb to run it effectively. You would need to get 2 sticks of 1gb ddr2 533mhz memory. You may see a difference in speed or you may not.

Adding RAM is always a wise step how much improvement you receive is just a crap shoot. If your OS is Win starter upgrading to Win 7 home edition will also help.;)

Whaa? Not normally one to question a mod but that sounds a tad off. I believe you mean 1 gb will run but with some speed issues, 2 gb to run effectively.

Lets just say I had a client that was running vista home basic with 1gb and I upgraded it to 2gb and it was still having some issues with speed, this was also a fresh install of windows.

Also the restore CD from dell will still have all of the crapware and programs they load onto there, so it's likely not to fix anything. If you can obtain a retail CD and install it that it would be better, though you will have to ring microsoft to activate it. Tell them you've reformatted due to issues and they should activate it for you.

I have a similar laptop, but it's the amd version with the TK53 cpu. Right now you have two 512mb sticks, so you will need to buy two 1gb sticks. You might want to look into running either windows 7 or windows xp. It made a world of difference when I switched with mine. That recovery partition is there incase you want to reformat so you don't need CDs. I would leave it there because if you delete it windows won't boot. However, if you switch to windows xp, or windows 7 you can delete no problem.

memory

Just added Crucial 1G stick. Computer is not recognizing extra ram. Still shows 958 mb of RAM as before. What now? Had two 512 sticks before. Left one , replaced one.

I don't think you can add just one Meg stick, you need to remove the one stick and ass a two Meg stick.:)

FYI, that laptop can only support up to 2gb of memory, so how can he add a 2gb stick? It seems you may have a bios limitation and it needs updated or something else.

Take the 512 stick out and see if the 1gb stick reads correctly in both slots.

Because I don't want to spend too much money on old laptops, I have add 1 gb ram to the old gateway laptop which come with 2 512mb ram. I took out one stick 512mb ram and put the 1 gb in there and it work and have increase the performance of the laptop, because it don't need to go to the vitual memory too much.
Now I also have 1.5 gb ram in my MSI U100 netbook. I guess is luck that these rams can be mixed together.
Cheers.
