Opinion on MSI laptops?

I may be purchasing a MSI gaming laptop. The specifications are quite alright, price is great (core i7 1.73ghz, 4gb ram, 500gb hdd, 5850 1gb, 15.6"). I just like to know if anyone have used MSI laptops. Are they durable?

I also had the same doubts with Asus Duability, but there was a service center in my city so I bought it. So get the MSI laptop only if they have decent service centers.

i think there's a service center where i am. time to persuade my mom ^^ thanks for the reply btw

MSI has always been rated as nice laptop's and since they are in the business of making desktop parts much like Asus usually companies like that build or have other companies build there laptops to a higher standard.

FWIW, from a "comprehensive review" of the best laptop brands, published in April, 2010:

"MSI’s presence in the laptop market has always felt a bit tentative, as if the brand isn’t really sure if it belongs there or not. MSI has tried to stand out with the slim X series laptops, which mimic the thin design of the Macbook Air, but these laptops proved to be poorly built. MSI has recently tried to instead gain traction in the gaming laptop market, and has some products that provide a good value, although the ASUS G series is often a better choice.

MSI laptops are usually not well designed when it comes to keyboards, touchpads, and general build quality. Reviews of the MSI X340, for example, stated that “Even a light key-press produces a visible flex in the surrounding keys, and the whole thing tends to bounce rather disconcertingly as you peck away. “ MSI’s netbooks and gaming laptops do not suffer from these issues to the same extent, but still are no where near the best laptops in terms of quality.

Reliability data is not available for MSI because of MSI’s status as a relatively new player in the market. Customer service is poor. The MSI website is almost useless as a resource for resolving issues, so you will have to call in even for the most basic of problems. The company doesn’t offer 24-hour support, either, further limiting support options. Hold times are usually not long, however.

Verdict: D

MSI is trying to gain traction, but is having trouble. Although it’s laptops have no gone down in quality, I downranked the brand significantly in this latest updated because MSI is starting to suffer significantly when compared to improvements made by companies like HP.

Hp quality is improving which is nice to see cause it was down for the last 2 or 3 years. I am personally a Dell fan. I still have my first Dell laptop which is going on 5 years old now and runs like the day I bought it. This current one I am typing on is just over a year old and not a single hick up.

The reason why im considering such a relatively new brand is because of the value for money it offers. Im looking at the core i7 model of MSI GX640. It has:
Core i7 1.73ghz
8Gb DDR3 RAM
500gb HDD
15.4" display
5850 1gb

All that for 1800SGD or 1431USD, very cheap for such specification. Laptops with similar specifications from other brands like Asus or Dell Alienware are well over the 2000USD range. I'm willing to ignore the short battery life and perhaps the rather loud system noise (since all my computers are always playing music). However, im having second thoughts after further research about this model as well as MSI laptops in general. Any suggestion? :X

Make sure you display is Full HD and I personally think whenever you have any type of PC, let it be laptop or desktop you should have a latest cpu and the i7 740QM (1.73Ghz) is 1 year old (Not too old though). I would recommend the i7 2630QM ( 2Ghz released this Jan) sandy bridge cpu laptop its faster at the same price.
I was shocked to see such great specs for the price

thanks so much for the link. I've just discovered another good deal from samsung, not the best brand but relatively alright. It's the RF411 and it's $1200. the specs are:
Core i7 2630QM 2.0ghz
8GB DDR3 1333 RAM
500gb 5400rpm
14" LED display
GT525M 2gb

I guess im down to the MSI GE620 and this model, unless any other deal come up. It's quite hard to find laptops of similar specs in such price range. any suggestion?

EDIT: the only doubt i have is that i can find absolutely no review on the samsung rf411. there arent even any decent photo. it's not on the official website of samsung either.

Why did you say Samsung not the best brand? I have heard otherwise.

The RF411 has got a slow HDD RPM, it needs to be at least 7200 but not recommended. The GE620 has a faster GPU and 15.6" screen.
These are few more good laptops around $1200 and good specs
Asus N53Sv

thanks so much for those links! the brochures that im looking at currently dont have those models but im going down to the IT mall tomorrow to scout around. Will definitely keep those in minds. As of now, im considering the asus n43sn. it's $1350 (i guess computers are just more expensive where i am).

Phew. went to all the shops in the IT malls and none of them had the ones in those links :( I guess im down to the Asus N43SN or the Samsung RF411. thanks for the reply everyone! :good:
